Main duties of the job

  1. Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for alcohol dependent patients with complex needs, making necessary adjustments.
  2. Identify patients at high risk from their alcohol use using the AUDIT assessment and take appropriate action in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
  3. Deliver evidence-based interventions, including motivational interviewing and withdrawal management, to support patients in reducing alcohol-related harm.
  4. Educate patients and families about healthy lifestyles and managing risks to health and well-being.
  5. Ensure accurate, up-to-date documentation using electronic health records and maintain compliance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
  6. Communicate effectively with patients, staff, and external organizations, using strategies to overcome barriers and promote continuity of care.
  7. Support research, audits, and quality initiatives to enhance patient care and nursing practice.
  8. Oversee the delivery of a 7-day alcohol care service model to ensure consistent and equitable coverage for patients across all settings.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered nurse/mental health nurse
  • Course undertaken relating to interventions in alcohol misuse
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant addiction experience /experience in delivering psychosocial interventions with patients
  • Non-medical prescribing qualification (e.g. V300)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post registration experience

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of current and emerging policies and strategies relating to alcohol care standards
  • Awareness of how to identify and reduce risks of alcohol-related harm

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Teaching & Education
  • Ability to prioritise clinical work effectively.
  • Demonstrate skills in management of alcohol withdrawal syndrome
  • Ability to risk assess the impact of alcohol misuse on an individual’s family and other close contacts
  • Ability to monitor the quality of own work and others
  • Ability to demonstrate good partnership working.

  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and provide leadership to the team
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels across the Department and Hospital

Other

Essential criteria
  • Can prove a basic computer literacy in Windows and IT systems
  • Acts in a way that is consistent with legislation, policies and procedures and abide by the Trust Health and Safety policies
  • Sufficient to perform the duties of the post with any aids and adaptations
  • Ability to identify and assess the potential risks involved in work activities and processes for self and others
