Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic Consultant to join the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Department. The unit provides Oral & Maxillofacial service, secondary Cleft lip & palate, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, Restorative dentistry as well as Maxillofacial Prosthodontics. It also houses the Minor Operations theatres for both Plastic Surgery and OMFS.  The department has access to a Cone Beam CT scanner and intra-oral scanner.  There is scope within the Trust to further develop the services provided. Within the department, new and follow up clinics as well as minor operations are performed under local anaesthesia or in combination with intravenous and inhalation sedation. Treatment is also provided under general anaesthesia both as day case and inpatient care. 

The department enjoys good working relationships with other surgical services, particularly ENT, Plastic Surgery, Histopathology and Radiology. 

The Trust is working in partnership with the local Major Trauma Centre at University Hospital Southampton (UHS) to deliver an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Service for the Wessex Trauma Network. A centralised oncology service is provided for the region from UHS.  There may be a requirement for the post holder to attend MDT clinics at UHS.

The department places a strong emphasis on the training of DCTs, Oral Surgery, Orthodontic and Maxillofacial StRs, as well as providing teaching and education to Vocational Trainees and local General Dental Practitioners.

Main duties of the job

Applicants are expected to have completed specialist training and have evidence of good outcomes in all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.  The successful applicant will be expected to provide a full range of Maxillofacial Surgery and will have the opportunity to develop subspecialist interests including orthognathic surgery, TMJ and cleft care.  The post holder will be expected to work as a member of multidisciplinary teams working with groups of colleagues locally and regionally to develop and deliver high quality care as well as supporting all levels of trainees in managing outpatients, inpatients and emergencies.

The post holder will be integrated into an on-call rota providing cover for emergency work locally and other units in the region as necessary.

The post holder may be required to work off site and therefore the use of a vehicle or other form of transport will be necessary to meet these requirements.

Person specification

Essential

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC/GDC registration
  • Entry on to the GMC/GDC Specialist Register via CCT or proposed CCT within 6 months
  • ALS and ATLS
  • Ability to fulfil all elements of the job description with specialist knowledge of oral diseases and their management plus competence in OMFS surgery and management of trauma
  • An interest in teaching others with evidence of supervising juniors
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work as part of a team and develop good working relationships with all staff groups
  • Understanding of pillars of clinical governance with evidence of clinical audit and QI projects
Desirable criteria
  • Compliant with mandatory training
  • Evidence of participation in research and/or publications in peer reviewed journal
  • Management course or role
