Job overview

To support midwives, neonatal nurses and other members of the multidisciplinary team in providing quality care that is safe and effective to women and babies using the service.

To provide care to women and babies using the Maternity and Neonatal services on allocation from and under the direct supervision of a registered midwife or nurse.

To provide support to midwives in all areas of the maternity and neonatal services on completion of specific training and competence where required.

We consider both Part-Time and Full-Time applications, but you MUST be flexible and able to cover a variety of shifts, both days and night as we operate 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.

Main duties of the job

To provide care to women, babies, and their families on allocation and under the supervision of a registered midwife or nurse within the maternity and neonatal services, and on completion of training and work based learning competences.

This will include:

Assisting women and babies with all activities of daily living, including:

personal hygiene i.e. bathing, showering, nappy changing and baby bathing.

Emptying and removing urinary catheters (following completion of competency).

Maintaining mobility and movement, minimising the risk of pressure sore development by assisting women to move about whilst in bed.

• Assisting with delivery of parenting education, including baby care and safety of the newborn and feeding advice and support (following basic competence based training).

• Support and promote breast feeding in line with current advice and following training.

• Assisting with the care of women’s and babies nutritional needs, i.e. serving meals and drinks and assisting with infant feeding.

• Under the direction of a midwife or nurse and on completion of mandatory training course carry out clinical observations on women and babies.

• Utilising aseptic technique to undertake: removal of IV cannula.

Accompanying and sustaining safe transfer of women and babies between wards and departments.
