CHFT have an exciting opportunity to appoint a Substantive Consultant Ophthalmologist - Specialising in Corneal Surgery and External Eye Disease

Come and join a forward thinking and supportive team.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic and forward thinking eye care service team comprising 20 Consultants, 9 Specialty and Trust Grade Doctors, 4 Specialty trainees, 2 Nurse Practitioners, 10 Orthoptists, 4 Optometrists, 2ACPs and a substantial team of Ophthalmic Nurses, technicians and healthcare assistants.

The department also benefits from our Eye Clinic Liaison Officer and 5 Ophthalmology Failsafe Co-ordinators and 5 Ophthalmology Schedulers/Pathway Co-Ordinators and admin support along with a supportive senior management team within the Head and Neck Directorate.

Main duties of the job

To provide specialist Consultant Led Corneal outpatient clinics: - new and follow-up emergency, routine, post-ops, as well surgical capacity for corneal and emergency patients.  

To provide teaching and education to trainees, Trust doctors, ACPs Optometrists, Orthoptists, Nurse practitioners to enhance future models of care and expansion within the specialty.

Opportunity to work with service leads to conduct service improvement, transformation and research.

Join the Consultant non-resident on-call – this will be a 1:10 provision.

Opportunity to perform cataract surgery depending on experience and sub-speciality interest in this area. 

Working for our organisation

CHFT has 2 main sites, Ophthalmology being based in Acre Mills Out-patients, and Huddersfield and Calderdale Royal Hospital, Halifax. 

The Trust is currently one of the most digitised NHS Trusts in the country having moved to Cerner Millennium Electronic Patient Records (EPR) in 2017. This makes us currently one of the most paper-light and digitised Ophthalmology Departments in the country including the use of Medisight by all clinical teams.

We are looking to appoint  an innovative and high performing Consultant Ophthalmologists specialising in Corneal surgery and External Eye Disease.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MRCOphth or equivalent
  • All applicants must have Specialist registration for Ophthalmology (or within 6 months of being admitted to the register for trainees, if currently in a training programme in the UK) but consideration will be given to applicants with relevant consultant level experience or trainees in a UK training scheme who are within 6 months of attaining specialist registration.
  • Applicants must be Registered with the General Medical Council and hold a Licence to Practise
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant higher degree

Experience and Achievements

Essential criteria
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of Ophthalmology
  • Evidence of extensive experience and training in assessing and treating patients in cornea / on call settings
  • Surgical experience across a range of corneal procedures including posterior endothelial keratoplasty, preferably DMEK
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding current issues within Ophthalmology and the future direction of the specialty
  • Understanding current issues within the wider NHS
  • Attendance at a recognised management course
  • Shows ability to work with and lead others across professions
  • Post CCT Fellowship in Vitreo Retinal management
  • Evidence of experience in planning and / or managing a General Ophthalmic / Cornea service.

Teaching and Training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and non-medical staff
Desirable criteria
  • Academic achievements/evidence of familiarity with research methods which have resulted in publications
  • Training in clinical and educational supervision
  • Attendance at a teaching course
  • Formal qualification in teaching/education

  • Eligibility to work in the UK
  • Ability to work in various locations throughout the network of services provided by Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust
  • For areas requiring EPP Clearance (Exposure Prone Procedures), this will also be a requirement of the health screening
  • An enhanced DBS disclosure will be required with the Disclosure and Barring Service
