Job overview

To undertake the duties of a Pharmacy Counter Assistant and contribute to the Pharmacy Service provided by the QE Facilities Out Patient Pharmacy, Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

  1. Work as part of the pharmacy team to deliver a professional, high quality, patient focused service from the QE Facilities Out-Patient Pharmacy.
  2. Be qualified and demonstrate competency when providing advice to the public and in making appropriate recommendations when selling ‘Over the Counter’ medicines.
  3. Ensure a high level of patient confidentiality as all times
  4. Understand the legal and professional obligations required on the counter of a GPhC registered Pharmacy.
  5. Undertake and support the development of the Pharmacy counter duties as described in the Pharmacy Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  6. Undertake appropriate training and demonstrate competency in the use of the counter cash drawer and processing cash and card payments.
  7. Undertake appropriate training and demonstrate competency in the use of the ASCRIBE Pharmacy Support System for ordering Pharmacy counter lines.
  8. Participate in the required stock taking procedures and report any stock discrepancies to the appropriate person.
  9. Maintain and develop personal knowledge and skills
  10. Maintain a clean and tidy environment in line with a ‘safer care’ Pharmacy policy.
  11. Be aware of the QEF Pharmacy Key Performance Indicator (KPI) targets and current results.
  12. Achieve objectives agreed at appraisal/individual performance review with line manager.
  13. Work with line manager to identify individual training needs and establish a Personal Development Plan.

QE Facilities (QEF) is a wholly owned subsidiary company of Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust (GHNT), based in the North East of England.

We provide a range of non- clinical services to GHNT and other NHS organisations. Our services include: estates, facilities services, procurement, medical engineering and devices, endoscopy decontamination and sterile services, transport, out-patient pharmacy, and prevention & management of violence & aggression training (PMVA). 

In addition we provide consultancy services, advising clients on all aspects of establishing a subsidiary company within an NHS body to the provision of VAT compliance advice.

QE Facilities work to their own Terms and Conditions and these are not the same as Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust Terms and Conditions. This is not an Agenda for Change Pay Rate. 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. Ability to carry out the receipt of Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust Out-Patient prescriptions.
  2. Be competent in providing advice to the public and in make appropriate recommendations when selling ‘Over the Counter’ medicines.
  3. Understand individual role and responsibilities and know when to refer queries to the dispensary team, Supervisor or Responsible Pharmacist.

Understand the principle of ‘Safer care’ in the dispensary and work within a ‘just culture’ environment for error reporting and learning from previous incidents.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of the Laws, Guidelines and Standards relating to the sale and supply of medicines from a GPhC registered Pharmacy
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills. Ability to explain clearly and listen to members of the public and other healthcare professionals
  • Demonstrate excellent Customer skills
  • Demonstrate an appropriate level of IT skills
  • Demonstrate appropriate level of organisational skills

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Pharmacy Counter Assistant experience in Hospital Pharmacy or Community Pharmacy

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Have an MCA or HCA NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Services
