Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen at UHNM to join the dynamic team of 7 Nephrology Consultants (participating on a 1:8.5 on-call rota), 2 Specialty Doctors and 12 Medics working at our main Royal Stoke Site and Satellite Units at County, and Leighton Hospitals.

Our Nephrology service provides all types of dialysis both in-centre and home, transplant, CKD, home therapies, AKI and hypertension.

The post holder will primarily lead the hypertension service and would be responsible for the development of this service. They would also contribute to the advanced kidney care service. In addition, they would be responsible for managing a cohort of haemodialysis patients at Royal Stoke hospital and will also run a weekly general nephrology clinic.

The post holder will be expected to contribute regularly to: procedures, supervision and training of the renal STs and trust grades.  As well as contributing to the education of trainees, quality improvement, research activities, and clinical governance of the service.

The UHNM renal team has a very strong clinical research programme led by International expert Professor Simon Davies and Dr Mark Lambie based within the University of Keele Institute for Science and Technology for Medicine.  

Applicants require full GMC Registration and should be either on or within 6 months of entry onto the Specialist Register at the time of interview.

Main duties of the job

The Renal department consists of 1 x 28 bedded inpatient ward with 4 flexi trolleys, a satellite unit at County Hospital (12 stations) and a satellite unit at Leighton (16 stations).   

The service provides both inpatient care and outpatient care at Royal Stoke and outpatient care at the satellite units to include dialysis and outpatient appointments.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in General Internal Medicine via one of the following: a) Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (The proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview) b) Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)
  • MRCP (UK) or an equivalent Qualification
Desirable criteria
  • MD, PhD or equivalent
  • Specialty Certificate Examination
  • Experience in running a hypertension service
  • Experience in advanced kidney care service

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCT in Renal Medicine
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion in a range of problems within both specialties.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients.
Desirable criteria
  • Higher training in a dedicated specialty training scheme.

Professional and Multidisciplinary Team Working

Essential criteria
  • Ability to lead, communicate, liaise and negotiate with others
  • Thorough and detailed knowledge of medical audit, medical education, current clinical and medical best practice
  • Understanding of the Clinical Governance process
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
  • Ability to motivate, innovate and support staff of all disciplines
  • Ability to organise, and manage outpatient priorities, waiting times / lists
