Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and innovative and self motivated individual to join our expanding pharmacy clinical trials team. The team at Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust comprises of approximately 500 pharmacy staff working across five sites and is one of the biggest pharmacy departments in the country. 

This is an exciting opportunity to join us as a band 4 or 5 pharmacy technician, depending on experience, to specialise in clinical trials. We work closely with other departments within the pharmacy, medical, university and research staff to support clinical trials at our Trust.

We will provide clinical trials training, support you to complete NIHR GCP training and become a competent member of the pharmacy clinical trials team.

 

Main duties of the job

You will participate in the planning, organisation, provision and maintenance of the clinical trials service and to be part of the flexible working team in line with current departmental policies and procedures for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, current UK and EU legislation.

Please also note this vacancy is banded dependent upon applicants experience relevant to this post. The banding of the successful applicant/s will start at Band 4 unless applicants meet the necessary threshold of skills and experience required to start on Band 5.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GPhC registration
  • BTEC in Pharmaceutical sciences or equivalent qualification/experience
  • NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent qualification/experience
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Is willing to undertake CGP training in line with Trust requirements for research
Desirable criteria
  • Aseptic services Module NVQ level 3
  • Has completed NIHR GCP training
  • Has completed a clinical trials technician competency.
  • Accredited Checking Technician Status (or working towards)

Further Training

Essential criteria
  • Microsoft Office Packages – evidence of short courses or relevant experience
Desirable criteria
  • University or Professional body accredited ICH Good Clinical Practice course
  • Health and Safety training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of dispensing medicines.
  • Experience of working as part of a team
  • Experience of delegation/organisation
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant post-qualification experience in hospital pharmacy
  • Hospital dispensing/ checking experience
  • Relevant experience of dispensing clinical trial prescriptions and has a completed dispensing competency for clinical trials
  • Previous aseptics experience in the preparation of intravenous additives including cytotoxic drugs and adult and neonatal TPN.
  • Experience of dispensing Chemocare prescriptions

Special Skills/Aptitudes

Essential criteria
  • Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills and is able to discuss issues with all grades of staff.
  • Evidence that you are able to follow written and verbal instructions and SOPs.
  • Able to analyse and interpret a range of information to solve technical problems, especially relating to clinical trials
  • Able to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Evidence that you have the ability to prioritise tasks and are able to meet deadlines whilst paying attention to detail
  • Is self-motivating and participates in the development of services
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in dispensing for clinical trials
  • Has understanding of the principles of the computerised prescribing system (Chemocare)
  • Counselling skills
  • Capable of using Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook and various applications such as JAC, Research database
  • Has excellent communication skills and is able to discuss issues with all grades of staff
  • Able to develop and implement policies for own work area and suggest suitable changes to develop services in other parts of the pharmacy
