Junior Clinical Fellow in Spinal Surgery

Job overview

The appointment is to commence 7th August 2025 for a fixed term period of 6 months, extendable to 2 years contingent upon mutual agreement between the Trust and the candidate.  The post does not award a National Training Number.  As this post is not recognised as a ‘training post’, full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required. The duties of this post are equivalent to CT1/CT2 Level.

 

The successful candidate will join a department of eight specialist spinal Consultants, a senior clinical fellow,  resident doctors (StR, GPVTS and Foundation doctors) and supported clinical nurse specialist. We have recently been accredited by Eurospine as a Spine Centre for Excellence. The clinical work will involve a wide range of spinal conditions including deformity, lumbar and cervical degenerative conditions, trauma, infection and tumour. Opportunities will be available to gain experience in the management of spinal injuries at the Princess Margaret Spinal Injuries Unit, which is sited on the Northern General Hospital campus.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide support for the spinal surgery service.  Opportunity to participate in the general orthopaedic on-call rota at Foundation/Core trainee level will be by mutual agreement.

 

The successful candidate will be expected to assist the resident doctors , when necessary, in the daily management of spinal inpatients but There will be ample opportunity to assist in theatre, attend outpatients and engage in research projects.

Research

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of research, audit or service review activity
Desirable criteria
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered with the GMC and with a licence to practise
  • Basic Medical Degree
Desirable criteria
  • Working towards MRCS examinations

Clinical experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in trauma and orthopaedics or Neurosurgery at Foundation / CT equivalent level (minimum 4 months, maximum 18 months).
  • NHS Experience (excluding Clinical Attachment)
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of spinal surgery

Teaching and training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching medical students and junior doctors

Continuous Professional Development
