Are you interested in being involved with Ocular Emergencies? You will learn how to triage, diagnose and treat many Ophthalmic conditions in our nurse led Emergency Eye Centre at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. This is a very exciting opportunity for an experienced nurse to specialise and work within a very experienced, wonderful team. 

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period of 12 months due to this being a training programme. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts.

Please also note this vacancy is a training post so all applicants will start at Band 5 and upon completion of necessary skills and/ or training will progress to Band 6.

Main duties of the job

• Training and working towards independently managing a group of patients within the ophthalmic specialty whilst working as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering individualised and personalised direct care.
• Under supervision, demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. This includes triage, history taking, physical examination and the requesting of agreed diagnostic procedures/clinical investigations.
• Responsible for the correct administration of medications/treatments via Patient Group Directives (PGDs).
• To be able to cannulate and administer IV medication, and perform orbital floor injections
• Be responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in the specialty.
• To interpret information and take appropriate action and to lead others to do the same
• Promote high quality clinical care, and assist in the development of the specialist service, through the use of evidence based practice and clinical standards
• With training, working towards becoming an autonomous practitioner, managing a work load independently
• Under supervision gaining the necessary clinical decision making skills to manage the care of patients attending with minor eye emergencies, progressing gradually to fundoscopy, and retinal eye emergencies

The Ophthalmology department based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital is the largest specialist Ophthalmology service in South Yorkshire.

As well as providing general eye care services to the people of Sheffield and South Yorkshire, we also provide regional and national specialist services including the treatment of patients with cancer of the eye, macular degeneration, surgical retina and oculoplastics.

The eye department based on A floor contains the outpatient clinic (with in excess of 50,000 attendances annually), emergency eye centre, glaucoma unit, low vision suite, prosthetic eye suite, Orthoptics, ophthalmic imaging and electrophysiology.
