Job overview

Crucible Pharmacy Limited (CPL), a dynamic and forward-thinking wholly owned subsidiary of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STH), is looking for a new Accuracy Checking Technician, initially at our Royal Hallamshire Hospital outpatient pharmacy, then additionally working at the Northern General Hospital pharmacy site as required.
Following the acquisition of two stores from Boots, CPL has completed refurbishments at both sites. Complemented by new investments in robotic dispensing systems, CPL is at the forefront of enhancing pharmacy services across STH.

Main duties of the job

•    To provide support in the delivery of a quality dispensing service.
•    To provide support in implementing developments within dispensing services to meet the needs of the patient.
•    To perform a final technical check on dispensed items prior to release.
•    When necessary, to label, dispense and supply prescriptions presenting to the pharmacy department in readiness for technical checking.
•    To work flexibly as part of the dispensary team to provide and maintain a comprehensive pharmaceutical service in line with current departmental policies and procedures.
•    To provide leadership to and act as a role model for the other support staff
•    To work collaboratively with other support staff to get the most from pharmacy automation

Working for our organisation

Crucible Pharmacy Ltd (CPL) is owned by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust but operates as a wholly-owned subsidiary providing pharmacy services to STH outpatients from 2 dispensaries covering all of the trust sites.  It also provides a dispensing service for inpatient discharge prescriptions including compliance aids.  
 
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has invested heavily in CPL with new, state of the art, outpatient dispensaries at both the Northern General and Royal Hallamshire sites, featuring the latest technology in automated dispensing systems.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

LEADERSHIP
1. To assist in supervising and planning the day-to-day workload of the dispensary ensuring efficient workflow and prioritisation under direction from the ACT Team Leader.
2. To allocate, organise and monitor the work of relevant pharmacy staff.
3. Responsible for problem solving and making judgments involving a range of situations which may require analysis (e.g., fault finding on tracking system and automation, amending stock/financial discrepancies, staffing other areas, workflow).
4. To ensure competent use of Prescription Tracking System producing relevant reports/data to ensure dispensary standards are achieved and maintained. Complete and analyse daily feedback report.
5. Contribute to the development, implementation and provision of effective training and ensure staff competence across relevant staff groups.
6. To participate in the Mentorship programme and provide training to new staff.
 
TECHNICAL
1. To work as an accredited checking technician including accuracy checking controlled drugs
2. Prepare, dispense and accuracy check patient compliance aids. Liaise with relatives/community staff/carers to ensure smooth transition of medication to the patient.
3. To interpret and follow up complex prescription queries.
4. Become trained to an advanced level on the automated dispensing systems, acting as a designated ‘super-user’ to assist Operational staff with problem solving and retrievals. In the absence of pharmacist unit manager, organising the workload in the dispensary if the system fails.
5. To ensure that labelling standards, dispensary standard operating and health and safety procedures (e.g. COSHH, local fire strategy) are adhered to. Suggest changes and provide constructive feedback to dispensary managers. Act as nominated fire warden as part of team leader duties
6. To maintain a broad level of dispensary practice including reception, drug return/ destruction, answering telephone queries, managing stock lists and labelling/dispensing
7. To maintain the day-to-day management, ordering, receiving, storing and recording and auditing of CDs under the direction of the pharmacy manager
8. To contribute to the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOPs) covering each of the aspects of the safe management of CDs.
9. To ensure the controlled drug register is maintained and the balance is reconciled against the stock of every CD via a regular stock audit as agreed with the STH Accountable Officer.
10. To contribute to safe and secure medicines practice. This includes medicines selection, procurement, storage, preparation, dispensing, supply and patient education
11. To identify and promptly report to the duty Responsible Pharmacist potential problems in the administration of medicines such as medicine interactions, newly prescribed drugs, physical factors that could affect patient safety, compliance etc
 
COMMUNICATION
1. Deal effectively with general enquiries and complaints, ensuring that all communication by the post-holder (verbally, electronically, by letter etc) with patients, relatives, carers, prescribers, pharmacists, staff, other health care professionals is of a high standard
2. To develop and maintain positive working relationships to facilitate efficient and effective services.
3. To maintain and update accurate pharmacy records relating to computer systems etc under the guidance of the pharmacy manager

1. To maintain own continuing professional and personal competence.
2. To adhere to all relevant procedures and policies of Crucible Pharmacy Ltd

 

Person specification

Qualifications and Education

Essential criteria
  • BTEC Level 3 or equivalent
  • GPhC registered pharmacy technician
  • Accredited Checking Technician status

Experience
