Job overview

Are you passionate about healthcare and eager to start a rewarding career in podiatry? Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Podiatry Apprentice (Band 3). This is a fantastic opportunity to work towards a BSc (Hons) degree in Podiatry and gain recognition by the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as an Allied Health Professional (AHP) Podiatrist

As a Podiatry Apprentice, you will work within one of our six Community Podiatry Teams across Oxfordshire, including locations such as Oxford City, Banbury, Witney, Abingdon, and Wallingford. You will develop and maintain knowledge, skills, and competencies related to the role of a Podiatrist through practical experience and academic learning provided by the University of Plymouth.

You will spend 3 days working in a clinical team, one day attending university online and another day will be spent working with the other Podiatry apprentices attending an in-person structured education day at Unipart or one the Oxford Health bases. 

Applicants must demonstrate they meet the following academic criteria before applying:

  • Maths and English GCSE Grade C or above or passed Functional Skills Level 2
  • Evidence of Level 3 education (BTEC, NCQ or A Level equivalent)

Interviews will be held in person in Oxford. 

Main duties of the job

You will have excellent communication skills, enjoy problem solving and wish to develop practical and intellectual skills to improve patient outcomes. You will be joining a dedicated podiatry team providing expert care to improve patients quality of life.

During your training you will develop skills and knowledge that will allow you to work in today's dynamic and changing healthcare environment. Whilst you will be based in one specific team, your placements will give you a variety of learning environments working across clinical placements to gain an appreciation of the different areas of the local healthcare service.

The Podiatry Apprenticeship combines full-time employment, work-based learning and academic study. You will be patient facing from the very start - so that you can apply and develop your new knowledge and skills with increasing confidence.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As Oxfordshire is a rural county and many of our bases are away from public transport routes; applicants must have a full valid driving licence and have access to a car for work. If necessary, adjustments can be considered in line with the Equality Act 2010.

Your responsibilities will include providing foot care to patients, assisting in minor surgery sessions, and delivering person-centred care in both clinical and community settings. You will also gain experience in various clinical areas, including diabetes, rheumatology, biomechanics, tissue viability, nail surgery, and wound management.

Interviews will be held on the 15th April at at Oxford Health base, venue TBC. Candidates will be required to attend the recruitment day in person.

Qualifications – Academic/Skills/Professional

Essential criteria
  • Two GCSE’s to include Maths and English – Grade C or above. Functional skills level 2 Maths and English will be considered. Evidence of Level 3: e.g. NVQ, BTEC, A Level
Desirable criteria
  • ONC or HNC IT/Computer qualification

Knowledge Requirements

Essential criteria
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages e.g. Word, Excel, MS Teams, PowerPoint and Outlook etc.
  • Understanding the scope of the role of the Apprentice Podiatrist in context of the team, department and the organisation and how the role may contribute to service development
  • Understanding of the demands of studying part-time alongside employment
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to use patient information systems to input data and clinical treatment
  • Knowledge of Professional Code of Conduct for Podiatry

Essential criteria
  • Applicants must have a full valid driving license and have access to a vehicle for work. Adjustments can be considered in line with the Equality Act 2010 where required

  • Previous experience of working or work experience in a health, care, social or education setting
