Job overview
To provide a comprehensive, specialist psychological service to patients at HMP Fosse Way.
A stepped care approach is used incorporating interventions at different levels (e.g. therapeutic milieu), the provision of psycho-education, support and individual as well as group therapies. Key models of therapy include Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Art therapy etc. However we are keen that all of the psychologists skills are used in developing the team, teaching, training, research, and service design. This is not a post that only delivers direct 1:1 therapy interventions.
We are seeking a Principal grade applied psychologist with a qualification in Clinical, Forensic or Counselling Psychology to join our well established psychology team working into Offender Health. You will join a team of psychologists in Offender Health, but an even bigger (420 staff) psychological professions service in the trust. There will be opportunities to attend trust wide CPD events twice a year and to network.
The successful applicant will be supported to attend external CPD training in line with their interests and the service needs.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide specialist formulation-driven psychological assessment and therapy (Step 4 model) by working autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the service’s policies and procedures.
Providing support, education and training for staff are central to the role of the psychologist.
Assisting in planning and evaluating the service will also be key components for the Post-holder.
To utilise research and audit skills for policy, practice and service development in the Care Group.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of this post to be undertaken in accordance with policies, procedures and practices of Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and with the Code of Conduct and Guidance on Professional Practice issued by the British Psychological Society. It is the post-holder’s responsibility to ensure they keep up-to-date with these policies and other policy documents.
To support the Consultant Psychologist/ Mental health lead in developing effective treatment pathways.
To identify and to advise service managers on those aspects of the service where psychological or organisation matters need addressing.

Essential criteria
- Able to sit still for long periods in clinical settings or report writing
- Ability to train in breakaway techniques for personal safety
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Honours degree in Psychology as accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).
- Doctorate in Clinical or Forensic or Counselling Psychology. Must be able to demonstrate eligibility for chartered status as a Clinical or Forensic or Counselling Psychologist and be registered with the HCPC as a practitioner Psychologist.
Desirable criteria
- Specific additional accreditation (i.e. specific therapies accreditation)
Training
Essential criteria
- Evidence of post-qualification specialist training in a specialist area of forensic / clinical/ counselling practice
- Evidence of CPD
- Evidence of completion of supervision training.
Desirable criteria
- Further specialist training in mental health/IDD
- Further specialist training in risk assessment and management / EMDR/ DBT / Schema Therapy/ CBT
Experience
Essential criteria
- Relevant experience developing expertise in clinical/forensic/Counselling psychology practice
- Experience of working effectively in multidisciplinary settings to devise specialist care programmes
- Relevant experience of providing clinical supervision, reflective practice and debriefs, and management of staff
Desirable criteria
- Project or other service development experience
- Publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
- Knowledge of relevant professional guidelines, best practice documents and policy drivers
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- To have well developed specialist knowledge and skills across a range of aspects of clinical/forensic/Counselling psychology, including IAPT model.
- An-depth understanding of risk, risk assessment.
- Advanced knowledge, experience and expertise in at least one specialist area of clinical/forensic/Counselling practice gained through specialist training and supervised practice (e.g. psychotherapy, neuropsychology, risk assessment, clinical/forensic supervision).
- Demonstrates an understanding of a variety of models of formulation and how to convey this to others in an accessible form.
Desirable criteria
- Understanding of risk assessments relating to self-harm and suicide
- Knowledge of commissioning processes, strategic development
Skills
Essential criteria
- Skills in complex psychological assessment, intervention and management with special relevance to ID, MH and PD (inclusive of trauma informed approaches)
- Communication of complex and sometimes distressing information to a wide range of audiences
- Able to engage constructively with people who are highly anxious, depressed or hostile.
