Job overview

We are looking for enthusiastic, highly motivated Therapy Assistant to join our team on the Stroke Unit. 

This is an exciting time to join us at Sherwood Forest Hospitals, we are committed to delivering outstanding outcomes for our patients recovering from stroke.

You would be joining a very friendly, supportive team with excellent in service training, development opportunities and good supervision structures. There is an expectation that the successful candidate will work towards completion of all competencies relevant to the role.

Main duties of the job

The primary role will be to support the Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists in the provision of timely assessment and rehabilitation of patients admitted to the stroke unit.

The role incorporates administrative duties, as well as clinical work, carrying out treatment programmes planned by the Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists.  You will work closely with the therapist and wider MDT where prioritisation skills and effective time management will be essential.  You will need to have the ability to therapeutically move patients.

Person specification

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Up to date clinical knowledge of a range of medical & surgical conditions
  • Skills of reasoning and decisions making for patient management
  • Basic computer and administration skills
  • Empathy skills
  • Manual handling skills
  • Must have a good understanding of the assistants role
  • Organisational skills
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to plan, carry out & evaluate individual therapeutic and educational sessions
  • Already worked as a therapy assistant and has rehabilitation experience
  • Ability to assess, provide, adjust & fit equipment as required according to trust policy.
  • Has an interest in amputee rehabilitation

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level III in Care “Diagnostic and Therapeutic Support” award or similar relevant award or ability to undertake training for the qualification on appointment.

Further Training

Essential criteria
  • Further relevant training to clinical area
Desirable criteria
  • Portfolio of evidence of CPD

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with patient in a hospital/ward environment.
  • Working within a multi-disciplinary team.
Desirable criteria
  • Proven experience of assessment & planning of therapeutic intervention/treatment plans
  • Experience of working in a rehabilitation setting and specifically with amputee patients

Contractual

Essential criteria
  • Ability to travel for home visits/follow up visits & access visits.
Desirable criteria
  • Full Drivers licence
