This post is for an Associate Practitioner to join our team in Virology and Research & Specialist Molecular at Nottingham Universities Hospital NHS Trust.   

The Virology department at the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS trust  provides a comprehensive 24/7 clinical diagnostic microbiology service. 

While working in the Virology department you will gain experience using the following equipment; Alinity I, Alinity M, Liaison, AltoStar, Cepheid, KingFisher and Maxwell extraction platforms and AusDiagnostics.

The department is currently undertaking the National ED Opt-Out BBV Screening.  We are always looking to improve our current services through innovation. 

The post holder will also gain experience working in the Research and Specialist Molecular department.  Where we are growing our sequencing capability using Sanger and MinION.

As an Associate Practitioner, the post holder will be a member of the departmental team and assist in the delivery of a quality driven, cost effective, patient focused service consistent with the Nottingham University Hospitals Trust's objectives. The post holders' main role is to provide technical support to State Registered Biomedical Scientists in carrying out the analysis of pathological samples using various technologies and to present the results for validation or authorisation as appropriate.

The post holder will work perform serological and molecular diagnostic testing, including Sanger Sequencing.

Person specification

Experiance

Essential criteria
  • Able to demonstrate competency at Higher MLA level (band 3) or equivalent
  • Significant experience of laboratory work in a Pathology environment
Desirable criteria
  • Able to demonstrate competency in a wide range of laboratory procedures and equipment
  • ECDL or equivalent
  • Experience working within a Microbiology Service.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Attained or working towards UFD in Pathology or hold equivalent qualifications, e.g. science degree or IBMS Certificate of Achievement Part 2.
Desirable criteria
  • Other Science-based qualifications

Communication and Relationship Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to provide and receive information in various forms with colleagues and other Trust staff
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Able to demonstrate team working
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of communicating with clients or patients by telephone
