Are you an experienced Pharmacy Technician looking to develop your operational and leadership skills in a busy acute hospital? 

An exciting additional role has become available within our busy Pharmacy dispensary service at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust due to internal promotion. 

Joining a group of Lead Technicians, the role supports the Chief Technician to ensure we deliver a safe and high-quality Pharmacy Dispensary service. Working within the Lead Technician group to manage the day-to-day coordination of a Dispensary area, the role is a great opportunity to gain  leadership and operational skills within a busy acute hospital Pharmacy setting.

The role will be based at our Inpatient Dispensary at City Hospital campus.

Main duties of the job

Key duties of the Lead Technician group:

- Support day-to-day management and coordination of a Pharmacy Dispensary area, planning and organising staffing to ensure an appropriate skill-mix, ensuring continuity of service.

- Participate in the dispensing and accuracy checking process, including the dispensing and safe handling of oral cytotoxics and controlled drugs.

- Assist in the monitoring of service Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to ensure quality, effectiveness and efficiency.

- Review service standards and provisions and implement change where appropriate through project improvement work.

- Complete individual staff annual performance reviews (appraisals) and support to identify objectives and training requirements.

- Support managing Pharmacy Dispensary staffing absence supported by the Trust Wellbeing and Attendance Management policy.

- Involved in the recruitment and selection of Pharmacy Dispensary service staff.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Qualified Pharmacy Technician registered (or has ability to register) with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Evidence of commitment to ongoing learning and personal development
Desirable criteria
  • Management and/or training qualifications, or equivalent experience demonstrated by acting in a role responsible for managing staff, services or resources

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Validated Pharmacy accuracy checker, or able to work towards this.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Pharmacy Dispensary Lead Technician role and responsibilities within a hospital pharmacy.
  • Knowledge of Pharmacy stock control and management systems.
  • Some supervisory or staff management experience.
  • Experience of prioritising workload and flow.
Desirable criteria
  • Experienced in all areas of Pharmacy gained through rotation.
  • Ability to train individuals and small groups.
  • Experience or knowledge of rota writing.

Communication & Relationship skills

Essential criteria
  • High level of interpersonal skills (both verbal and written).
  • Able to communicate information effectively, clearly and concisely to a wide range of staff, healthcare professionals and patients.
  • Demonstrates diplomacy in handling difficult workforce situations (including non-Pharmacy departmental staff).
  • Demonstrate leadership skills and is approachable.
  • Works effectively both as part of a team and independently.

Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to analyse, interpret, label and dispense from prescriptions.
  • Proven evidence of judgement and prioritisation skills in relation to service deadlines and targets.
  • Demonstrates competency and accuracy under pressure.
  • Able to identify, prioritise and problem solve.
  • Experience of service data collection activities and analysis.
  • Demonstrates logical thinking and can use initiative when dealing with a variety of situations.
  • Knows own limitations and when to refer.

Planning & Organisational skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience in organising staffing workload to meet pharmacy services and patient need.
  • Manages own time effectively and meet required deadlines or targets.
  • Self-motivated and able to motivate others.
  • Understands the principles of effective delegation.
  • Ability to use initiative both independently and within a team.
  • Can demonstrate ability to prioritise accordingly.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of achieving or managing Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s).

Physical skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to cope with frequent, light to moderate, manual handling activities.
  • Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time.
  • Works accurately with an unpredictable workload and can manage potential interruptions.
  • Can maintain concentration to ensure accuracy of work.
  • Good level of computer literacy.
Desirable criteria
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft packages (Word and Excel).

  • Cross-campus working.
  • Flexibility to participate in general Pharmacy Dispensary duties, including the 7-day shifted working rota and Bank Holidays rota.
