Job overview

Applications are invited for a Critical Care Senior Clinical Fellow post in critical care medicine to start May 2025. The posts would be for six months with an opportunity to extend this to twelve months by mutual consent.

These posts would suit doctors wishing to gain experience or further experience and skills in critical care medicine, especially doctors in anaesthesia, general and emergency medicine, respiratory medicine and surgery. All are strongly encouraged to apply.

Main duties of the job

You would be working with Foundation Year 2, Core trainees and Specialty trainee doctors from a wide range of specialties to provide 24-hour cover for critical care.

Our aim is to support you to progress in either a career in intensive care medicine or to gain experience in dealing with critically ill patients in whatever specialty you choose to follow. You will be allocated an educational supervisor who will act as advisor and mentor. You will gain experience in managing critically unwell patients and skills relating to critical care medicine including line insertions; bronchoscopy; tracheostomy; drain insertion; transfer of level 2 and 3 patients to CT, MRI, interventional radiology and theatre. There is also the opportunity to learn ultrasound and ECHO skills.

You will be encouraged to develop your non-clinical skills and your portfolio by participating in audit, quality improvement projects, teaching, education and research. The unit is currently participating in several research studies coordinated by our Research lead Professor Welters and her team of research nurses and doctors.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
Desirable criteria
  • FRCA, MRCP, FRCS or part
  • Other post graduate qualification/diploma
  • Other qualifications (Intercalated degree, Masters etc.)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 1 year training in UK Anaesthesia
  • Minimum of 6 months experience in UK Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) training
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of Core Training in Anaesthesia or Intensive Care Medicine
  • Core training in related specialties e.g. Acute or Emergency Medicine

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • As expected for completion of 1 year training in Anaesthesia and 6 months training in ICM
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate qualifications in Anaesthesia or ICM (RCOA or FFICM)

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Advanced airway skills Independent practical skills in intensive care procedures e.g. CVC/arterial
  • Advanced Life Support
