Job overview
The post holder will work as an integral part of the team. He / she will be responsible for assisting the Ward Manager to provide a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for patients on the ward.
• The main elements of the role include cleaning, catering and reporting minor maintenance problems, together with other specified tasks to meet individual needs, as determined by the ward Manager / Nurse in Charge.
• The post holder will be required to work closely with the Ward Manager / Senior Nursing Staff in order to monitor quality standards and rectify deficiencies.
Main duties of the job
Responsible for assisting the Ward Manager to provide a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for patients.
Work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients.
Responsible for cleaning, stock control, reporting minor maintenance problems and basic administration duties, together with other specified tasks to meet the needs of the department, as determined by the Ward team manager.
Ensure that the department kitchen areas are kept clean, tidy and stocked and the fridge temperatures are monitored daily.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Assist with the preparation of meals, snacks and drinks, assisting patients with feeding as necessary e.g., cutting up food, placing food within reach encouraging patients to eat.
• Encourage and assist patients to order food, where necessary taking into account special needs and medical requirements.
• In conjunction with nursing staff ensure that discharged and newly admitted patient’s meal requirements are actioned.
• Ensure that patients whose fluid intake is not medically restricted have access to fresh water.
• Participate in weekly cleaning schedules.
• Carry out spot cleaning and ensure spillages are dealt with swiftly and efficiently.
• Ensure general and specialist equipment e.g., drip stands and commodes are cleaned as per cleaning schedule.
• Ensure the Ward is always safe and tidy e.g., remove clutter, tidy notice boards, ensure storage rooms are clean and tidy.
• Check hand gel, glove and apron dispensers and replenish as needed.
• Maintain ward stocks.
• Respect the privacy and dignity of patients whilst carrying out housekeeping duties.
• Contribute to patient’s wellbeing and social needs, e.g., assist staff by collecting newspapers/magazines.
• Assist in keeping information racks and notice boards updated and that information is laminated when appropriate.
• Care for and assist in safe storage and retrieval of patient’s property and valuables in accordance with Trust policy.

Essential criteria
- Ability to communicate in a variety of settings with patients/relatives of varying levels of understanding.
- Ability to work efficiently within a team.
- Excellent time management skills.
- Basic IT skills.
- Experience in a healthcare environment / life experience
Qualifications & Education
