Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Sleep Physiologist to join the team in the Sleep Service, Trafford General Hospital, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.
The Sleep Service is a modern dynamic unit servicing a large area of the North West. It has a CPAP user base of over 8,000 patients and provides a wide range of services including diagnosis and treatment of non-respiratory sleep disorders.
The service is actively involved in the teaching of students on the PTP and STP courses at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Main duties of the job
The position will involve:
Supporting the service manager in the day to day management and leadership of the department.
Performing and analysing in-patient and outpatient sleep studies (including respiratory polygraphy, full video polysomnography, multiple sleep latency testing, maintenance of wakefulness testing and actigraphy).
CPAP issue and follow up (face-to-face and remote clinics).
Teaching, training and mentoring of students and junior staff.
Supervision and line management of junior staff, stock control and procurement
Service improvement, audit and quality control.
The service encourages and supports flexible working (including home working where appropriate) but the successful applicant may be expected to cover evening and night shifts depending on service demand.

Education/Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BSc Physiological sciences, or Practitioner Training Programme, or equivalent
- Scientific Training Programme or equivalence
- RCCP/ AHCS registration or eligible to register.
- Documented evidence of good clinical practice and continued professional development.
- Post registration qualification in specialist areas
Desirable criteria
- Eligible for registration on the ’M’ register of Health Care Scientists
- Registered with ESRS as Somnologist Technologist, or Somnologist.
- Registered with Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (RPSGT)
Experience
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable experience as a Respiratory/Sleep Healthcare scientist/ science practitioner.
- Presentation / teaching skills required to mentor new members of staff.
- Experience in recording, interpreting, and reporting highly complex polysomnographic sleep data.
- Experience of training, mentoring, and assessing staff.
- Experience of preparing presentations and lecturing at degree leve
- Experience of research and audit.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of leading through change.
- Experience of working in a large multi- disciplinary setting.
- Training for trainers’ qualification.
- Experience of lung function testing
- Experience in Psychological testing or treatment
Skills
Essential criteria
- Excellent communication skills.
- Giving presentations to inform and influence practice.
