Job overview

The post holders will join the existing team of consultant paediatricians, specialty doctors and specialty trainees working in the Paediatric Directorate which is part of the Women and Children’s Division of The Royal Oldham Hospital part of the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust (NCA).

Consultant will join an existing team of 16 consultants and will work in a variety of settings including the emergency department, the paediatric observation and assessment unit, the ward and paediatric outpatients including designated safeguarding clinics This role does not involve neonatal work as the trust has a separate level 3 neonatal unit.

Main duties of the job

The Royal Oldham Hospital has a single inpatient paediatric ward with 24 Paediatric beds including 4 HDU beds. There is also a 24 hour Paediatric observation and assessment unit (POAU). The Emergency department at Royal Oldham is a recognised Trauma Unit in Greater Manchester. A paediatric area within the emergency department has been opened. There is a Level 3 Tertiary Neonatal Unit at Oldham and this has its own directorate and separate staffing arrangements. There is a paediatric specific outpatients department located on the Royal Oldham hospital site. Paediatric outpatient clinics are also held at Rochdale hospital.

Professional Registration and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register / Admission to the Register within 6 months of interview
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council with a valid license to practice (or demonstrates eligibility to apply for registration and license)
  • MRCPCH or show evidence of equivalent training and experience
Desirable criteria
  • Post Graduate Degree e.g. MD, PhD, MSc
  • Evidence of Accredited Clinical & Educational Supervision of Medical Learners

Knowledge, Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Wide experience in General Paediatrics
  • Good understanding of Clinical Governance
  • Evidence of audit work and where this has brought about change
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of relevant peer reviewed papers and other publications (e.g. book chapter, book editor, case report – not abstracts or letters)

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of development and management of change
  • Evidence of good organisational and leadership skills
  • Experience of teaching juniors, medical students and other health care professionals.
Desirable criteria
  • Able to manage and lead change internally and within multi-agency setting
  • Attendance at management course
  • Publication of research articles, demonstrating understanding of research methodology and commitments
