Job overview

This is a new substantive post and has arisen due to an increase in demand for radiology services and as a part of transformation and expansion.

The advertised post is to support diagnostic neuroradiology. The successful applicants should have completed training in diagnostic radiology and experience in neuroradiology or a neuroradiology fellowship is preferable.

We pride ourselves in the delivery of a State-of-the-Art service, where our patients are at the core of a strategy of delivering high quality individualised treatments in a culturally sensitive, dignified, and compassionate environment.

We are a Neuroscience centre catering to a large population serving North-east London and are a referral centre for neurosurgery for other trusts in Essex as well. There are weekly Neuro-oncology, Neurology and MS, Head and neck, Skull base, Head and Neck, Thyroid and Spine MDTs which are shared amongst specialist Radiologists. Please find the attached job description and person specification.

Main duties of the job

Consultant Neuro, Head and Neck Radiologist

The post is designed to share the responsibility for the provision of comprehensive diagnostic neuroradiology services including the provision of a range of MDT and on-call services.

The successful candidate is expected to report cross-sectional neuro and head and neck radiology scans performed on the new MRI and CT scanners at the CDC and cross-sectional images performed on the MRI and CT scanners affiliated with the A&E and Inpatient caseload at King George’s and Queen’s Hospital.

It is desirable that the candidate has experience with advanced imaging modailities such as Perfusion, Spectroscopy, Functional MRI to expand the service as we have recently acquired a 3T MRI with all the facilities.

Contribution to the general duty roster which involves vetting cross-sectional scans and solving queries from clinical and radiology teams is mandatory.

The post holder is expected to contribute to the Spine MDT with other colleagues. If required or interested the candidate may contribute to other neuro/head and neck radiology MDTs as outline above.

We have a separate neuro IR service and there is no neuro IR requirement for this post, but the candidate should be able to report CT Head and Neck angiograms independently to support the service.

Working for our organisation

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better. We were the most improved Trust in England for A&E performance in 2023/24; we’re no longer in special measures; and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, has been named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal. Our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and that our patients are happy with.

Many of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. More than 400 of them are on apprenticeship programmes and we’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We operate from two main sites - King George Hospital (KGH) in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London – more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023.

Patients across north east London are benefitting from two new state of the art theatres at KGH and our Community Diagnostic Centres at Barking Community Hospital and St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub will significantly increase the number of scans that can be carried out.

We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record next year. This will mean the records of any patient visiting one of the seven hospitals run by BHRUT and Barts Health will be accessible to the clinical teams. It’ll make things easier for staff and will be better for patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Workload is varied, but largely consists of supporting inpatient /AE neuroradiology service, busy Stroke Unit, Neurology service, Neurosurgery and Neuro ITU. Contribution to head and neck services especially head and neck diagnostic scans and FNA clinics is preferable. The candidate will be expected to cover Spine MDT and support other Neuro/Head and neck radiology MDT’s as required or interested.

We also have a separate neuro IR service. This post does not have neuro interventional requirement, but the candidate should be well versed with reporting CT Angiograms for Stroke, aneurysms etc.

We have recently acquired a 3T MRI with Spectroscopy, perfusion and DTI facilities and it is desirable that the candidate has experience in these advanced imaging modalities to take the service forward.

The candidate will be expected to support diagnostic neuroradiology on-call service as well.

It is expected that the candidate has experience in head and neck FNA’s to support the head and neck/Thyroid service.
