An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Ophthalmology department at BHRUT as a Specialty Doctor in Oculoplastics, to work with the team to develop and streamline our services. We warmly welcome you to our busy and dynamic team, which delivers a comprehensive and specialised Ophthalmology service to a population of over 750,000. Our team boasts of highly experienced specialists in Medical Retina, Cornea, Paediatrics, Neuro-Ophthalmology , Glaucoma and Oculoplastics. We have a close working relationship with other specialties within the Trust that further support the service.
Main duties of the job
Specialty Doctor Oculoplastics
We are excited to recruit a oculoplastics specialty doctor to provide excellent care to our patients.
The successful candidate will have a broad experience in the management of ophthalmology outpatients and will have to engage in all aspects of ophthalmology patient pathways.
The workload will include oculoplastics clinics and eye casualty sessions, and the post holder will also be expected to fulfil the following duties within the agreed job plan:
- Provision and development of exceptional ophthalmology services
- Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and the proper functioning of the department
- Actively participate in clinical governance and audits
- Actively participate in departmental meetings
These duties are subject to review from time to time in the light of the changing requirements of the service.

We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 330,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.
Our patients are benefitting from our Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub in Hornchurch.
These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and are providing an extra 88,000 scans a year.
The majority of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The appointee will be expected to comply with all relevant trust policies relating to administration of patient care.
o The post holder will be trained in diagnosing and managing oculoplastics conditions.
o There is no surgery job-planned for this post. However, there would be the opportunity for the successful candidate to join consultants in theatre during their SPA time and to undertake theatre sessions when colleagues are on leave.
o The successful applicants will work innovatively with our clinical team and a range of partners to research, design and deliver this service. Key partners will be the trust A&E departments, optometrist, general practitioners, nurses and managers in primary and secondary care
o The post holders will be involved in oculoplastics clinics and have sessions supporting eye urgent care.
o The post holders will participate in the on-going provision of ophthalmology services in the eye unit and contribute to the development of the unit.
o The post holders will work with colleagues to provide a comprehensive and coordinated ophthalmology service across the trust and will work with consultants in running the service.
o The postholder will be expected to attend clinical meetings and to take part in continual medical activities in line with royal college guidelines.
o Study leave for continuing medical education is available as provided under the terms and conditions of service for hospital medical and dental staff.
The specialty doctors have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and under the care of consultant ophthalmologists within relevant services. The post holders will undertake administrative duties associated with the care of their patients and assist the running of clinics in line with trust policies and Royal College of Ophthalmologists guidelines.

Essential & Desirable
Essential criteria
- MBBS / MRCS / FRCS or equivalent medical qualification
- Subspecialty knowledge and experience in Oculoplastics
- Excellent communication skills and team player
Desirable criteria
- Experience in clinical or quality improvement audit
- Previous presentations and/ or publications
- Commitment to teaching
