The North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust is a medium-sized acute and community trust with over 525 beds and over 600 community staff, serving more than 600,000 people living across Enfield and Haringey and the surrounding areas, including Barnet and Waltham Forest.
The hospital has been on its present site for over 100 years and was established as an NHS trust by statute in December 1990. The Trust’s services are provided on the North Middlesex University Hospital site as well as a range of community sites across the London Borough of Enfield, including at partner hospitals. They provide services in collaboration with a range of partners, including local GPs, acute, mental health and other community health service providers across North Central London.
In the year ending 31 March 2022, the Trust reported a turnover of £419.7m and employed almost 4,000 staff. Following the transfer of Enfield Community Services on 1st April 2023, this has increased as we have welcomed over 600 new staff including District Nurses, Community Matrons, Community Physiotherapists, Psychologists and many more across a wide range of adult and children’s community services in Enfield. Job overview
We have an exciting opportunity to join the North Middlesex University Hospital Haematology Team. We have a 10 PA Consultant post available with a special interested in Red Cell. This post is joint with UCLH, which provides an exciting opportunity for 2 large network haemoglobinopathy centres to develop and share expertise.
The post-holder’s primary focus at NMUH will be to lead, develop, and promote a comprehensive red cell service both at the NMUH site and within the community. With a thorough background in haematology, the post-holder will be equipped to address a wide range of clinical and laboratory haematology issues commonly encountered in a district general hospital setting. Additionally, the post-holder will collaborate closely with colleagues in the Red Cell Network (RCN) and the HCC to ensure the delivery of exceptional red cell care at NMUH. The role includes running at least one weekly red cell outpatient clinic and providing clinical leadership and oversight for patients attending the Sickle and Thalassaemia Day Unit, as well as the ED Bypass service.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will hold 3.5 regular clinics per week, including:
- A weekly red cell clinic at NMUH
- A weekly red cell clinic at UCLH
- A weekly clinic based on the applicant’s other interest (subject to approval) at NMUH
- An alternate week diagnostic clinic at UCLH
At NMUH The Consultants operate an ‘attending’ system for all Haematology in-patients for one calendar month at a time, on a rotating basis: 1:4 for this post. There are 10 – 20 in-patients at any one time, comprising of a variety of haematology-oncology patients, sickle cell patients, and a small number of general haematology patients. It is agreed that the post-holder will reduce their clinic activity when attending on the ward where this clashes with their ward round (Monday am and Thu am)
At UCLH, attending for red cell inpatients will be 6 weeks per year, and they would also be on-call during that time. Ward attending is in 2-weekly blocks, to be allocated as per discussion with team based around leave etc. It is expected that consultants will do at least 2 ward rounds a week of all in patients (e.g.,Mondays and Fridays) but should be available every day for in person and telephone reviews. There is a dedicated red cell registrar allocated to the team. Clinic attendance is expected when on call at either of the sites unless by highly specific arrangements.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder should have a broad training in clinical and laboratory haematology and must hold full and specialist registration with a licence to practise with General Medical Council. Additionally, they should be holder of Certificate of Completion of Training or be within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by the date of interview. Development of an area of special interest will be encouraged and the post holder will be expected to participate in the on-call rota, providing advice and clinical help across hospital and community.

Essential criteria
- Full GMC specialist registration
- Full MRCP or equivalent
- Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)
- Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
