Job overview
Our Cellular Department is looking for an outstanding applicant with a high degree of enthusiasm, flexibility and commitment to train and study as an Apprentice Medical Laboratory Assistant.
Apprentices will be required to work towards the Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship Standard. You will receive full support from an in-house mentor and college assessor to complete the qualification.
You will have access to varied development opportunities, learn new skills, meet great people and do things you would never have done. You will learn about working in a hospital, interacting with people from all different roles to build skills and enhance your career path.
You will make an impact, be challenged to think differently, be bold and help innovate to keep improving things. Everything we do centres around patient care which means your role is pivotal and something really to be proud of.
Please note as this position is an apprenticeship role may involve rotation across both Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley District General Hospital sites and different areas of the department over the 24-month training programme.
Candidates will be shortlisted and invited for a pre-interview assessment, including a lab tour. Successful candidates will then be invited to attend a formal interview..
Main duties of the job
The main responsibilities include using the laboratory information system for data entry, monitoring, controlling and handling stock, waste management, handing and disposing of chemicals and reagents in accordance with COSHH, using personal protective equipment, maintaining laboratory equipment such as tissue processors and stainers, using standard operating procedures. Handling specimens and taking dictation whilst working with pathologists and biomedical scientists. Administrative duties such as filing blocks and slides and preparing meetings.
Working for our organisation
The Cellular Pathology department provides an extensive range of cancer diagnostic services where qualified Medical Laboratory Assistant staff play an important role working alongside Biomedical Scientists, and other healthcare professionals and consultant Pathologists. The post is varied and provides support to allow the Cellular Pathology service to operate smoothly.

Qualifications & Education
Essential criteria
- Educated to GCSE standard, or equivalent, with at least 4 passes at grade A to C or equivalent. To include; Maths, English & a Science subject
- Please note if you possess a Level 4 Qualification or above you are not eligible for this apprenticeship
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working with others
- Basic IT skills
- Computer literate
- General appreciation of the importance of Health & Safety issues
- Understands the need for confidentiality
Desirable criteria
- Previous Data Input experience
- Previous Cellular Pathology experience
