Specialist Electronics Technician (Radiotherapy)

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

KEY RELATIONSHIPS: Engineers, Clinical Scientists, Dosimetrists and Therapeutic Radiographers.

· To perform planned and unplanned maintenance of radiotherapy treatment delivery and associated IT systems.

· To manufacture bespoke beam limiting devices to required tolerances using lead and high-density low melting point alloy.

· To perform planned and unplanned maintenance of beam measuring equipment.

· To design, manufacture and test mechanical and electronic devices as requested by Radiotherapy Physicists and Therapeutic Radiographers.

· To install, modify and upgrade radiotherapy and associated equipment.

· To liaise with equipment manufacturers for maintenance advice and guidance.

· To attend manufacturers technical training courses.

· To manufacture bespoke and replacement test aids.

· To provide technical training on engineering or technical matters to other staff within the department

· Order high capital replacement parts following machine breakdown.

· Carry the departmental phone on a rotational basis to provide first contact for radiotherapy equipment problems.

· To participate in departmental projects.

· Cascade information from training to other staff members enabling them to maintain appropriate and correct standards.

· To provide technical advice on engineering or technical matters to other staff within the department.

· To perform non-routine quality control of the radiotherapy treatment equipment following repairs or major service to ensure that all functions are within tolerances.

· To participate in the routine radiotherapy quality assurance.

· To perform unplanned maintenance of clinical dosimeters.

· To manage test equipment calibration and maintenance.

· To be able to locate documentation necessary for the correct operation and maintenance of equipment within radiotherapy.

· To collect and analyse complex data from radiotherapy treatment equipment to enable failure trends and performance variation to be identified.

· To use commercially available software to produce text documents, spreadsheets and databases for data analysis.

· Maintain logs of any faults or interventions that occur on radiotherapy equipment.

· To assist in R&D projects and to liaise with other staff working on such projects.

· Participate in appraisal and personal development planning process and has current appraisal and personal development plan.

· Undertakes identified learning and development opportunities as agreed with the manager.

· Participates in mandatory training as outlines by the Trust.

· Maintain up to date technical knowledge by liaison with manufacturers, technical training and technical publications.

· To work towards registration on the Register of Clinical Technologists.

· To be aware of, and comply with, current radiation protection legislation and to bring to the attention of the RPS or RPA any safety issues as outlined by the Trust.

· To be aware of, and comply with, current and applicable Health and Safety legislation.

Essential criteria

Degree, HND/HNC or equivalent training and experience
Willing to work towards membership of the Register of Clinical Technologists

Desirable criteria

On the register of clinical technologists
Eligible for incorporated membership of IPEM or other relevant professional body.
Satisfactory completion of manufacturer’s technical training courses.

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria

Significant experience of complex systems
Knowledge of appropriate legislation
Knowledge of physics and general scientific principles
Experience in fault diagnosis and rectification on complex industrial, avionic or medical systems.
A level of knowledge attained by post-graduation qualification or experience within a relevant engineering discipline
