Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a Clinical endoscopist or in the case of an exceptional candidate a Trainee Clinical endoscopist to join our team at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. We are seeking a JAG accredited Clinical endoscopist who is experienced at undertaking independent endoscopy lists and performing diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures. 

You will be part of a friendly Clinical endoscopist team who are committed to delivering high quality patient care.

You will have a clinical responsibility to support the ongoing development and sustainability of a high quality, innovative endoscopy service at the Trust. The principle role will be the provision of endoscopy capacity (colonoscopy/gastroscopy/sigmoidoscopy) in planned sessions and also covering endoscopy lists for other endoscopy colleagues. 

As part of the role, you will be expected to be BCSP endoscopy accredited or to gain accreditation to provide BCSP endoscopy.
You will manage, lead, develop and participate in research, risk management, clinical intervention, monitoring and clinical audit.

The role also involves representing the Trust in relevant clinical networks and in joint working with local, regional and national bodies.
You will be accountable for own professional actions and practice endoscopic procedures in accordance with the mandatory requirements of JAG and BSG.

Main duties of the job

So, a little bit about us……We are situated within two hospitals, working closely with each other and providing excellent care with compassion to the communities we serve. We are a Major Trauma Centre and Vascular Centre for Lancashire & South Cumbria, providing a range of tertiary services including, Maxillo-facial, Plastics, Neurosciences, Oncology & Radiotherapy, Renal, Respiratory, Specialist Mobility & Rehabilitation.

 

We have two JAG accredited endoscopy units (based at the Royal Preston Hospital & at Chorley Hospital) each with 2 endoscopy rooms and have very recently we have opened a further 2 room unit at Royal Preston Hospital. The units perform a wide range of endoscopic procedures to both inpatients and outpatients including:

  • GI diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR)/ Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)/Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS).
  • GI emergency bleed lists.
  • National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP) lists.
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy including: Endobronchial Ultrasound/Trans Bronchial Needle Aspiration (EBUS/TBNA)/Endobronchial valves and coils and stents/Thoracoscopy/Indwelling pleural catheter placement/Nasal-endoscopy for Induced Laryngeal Obstruction.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered nurse or equivalent allied health professional qualification
  • JAG accredited training in colonoscopy/upper GI endoscopy.
  • Non-medical prescribing qualification
  • Degree in nursing/specialist practice or equivalent.
  • Bowel Cancer Screening Programme accreditation achieved or will be achieved within six months of appointment.
  • Evidence of expert professional/clinical knowledge in gastrointestinal endoscopy.
Desirable criteria
  • Master’s degree relevant to nursing practice or working towards.
  • JAG accredited train the trainer qualification.

Knowledge & experience

Essential criteria
  • Post registration experience working as an autonomous and advanced practitioner in relevant field
  • Significant experience in endoscopy/gastroenterology.
  • Evidence of development of protocols and clinical audit.
  • Evidence of management and multidisciplinary team leadership
  • Experience of clinical governance including audit, risk management, accountability and evidence-based practice.
  • Experience of implementing change
  • Evidence of involvement/implementation of GRS standards.
  • Experience of patient/user involvement initiatives.
  • Evidence of on-going CPD – through portfolio.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of training in therapeutic flexible sigmoidoscopy/ colonoscopy /gastroscopy
  • Knowledge of BSG guidelines.
  • Project management training/experience.
