Senior Biomedical Scientist – Central Specimen Reception

Job overview

The principal duty of the post holder will be to act as an experienced Specialist State Registered Biomedical Scientist and manage and co-ordinate all medical laboratory assistants  within CSR and associated areas. They must ensure the delivery of a smooth, efficient and effective quality service and provide support in the development and continuous improvement of the CSR service. This post holder may be required to work in close liaison with the wider health community to effect change, e.g., collaboration working groups, Trust transport, IT and GP’s.

Additional quality management duties will be undertaken as directed by the Biochemistry Manager in consultation with the post holder.

 

Main duties of the job

 Continually review the sample pathway to ensure sustainability of change and impact.

·     To provide effective day to day management of the CSR MLA team, ensuring the provision of a quality service that is properly integrated to meet directorate and service requirements.

·      To ensure that there are controlled standard operating procedures for all processes within the department and that they are adhered to.

·       To establish and monitor turnaround times within the section, producing regular reports and taking corrective actions as necessary.

·         Management and co-ordination of all annual leave and sickness.

·      Oversee CSR staff contracts, ensuring they are complete and kept up to date.

·      Provide regular reports on performance using collaborative measurement methodology, showing achievements in service improvement, patient coverage and the impact on patient care.

·        Work effectively with department leads, clinicians, patient forums and muti-disciplinary teams.

·        Chair CSR management meetings.

·         Communicate with members of Biochemistry/Haematology/Immunology departments to increase workflow productivity and provide service improvements.

·     

·        Ensure KPI’s for CSR are recorded and reported to the Biochemistry Manager.

·        Oversee CSR budget and record data to report to the Biochemistry Manager.

·         Maintain HCPC registration.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Contribute to the decisions of strategic planning and policy of the Central Specimen Reception Department.

·     To manage in the recruitment, selection and appropriate training of staff within the area of responsibility to achieve and maintain the Directorate’s activity levels.

  • To provide statistical information and monthly reports to the management.
  • Ensure the effective supervision of the staff working within the department.
  • To ensure compliance with statutory regulations (COSHH, Health & Safety, Fire etc.) in the laboratory.
  • To liaise with the Pathology Quality Manager to ensure that all aspects of the Directorate and departmental Quality Management System are adhered to.
  • To contribute, as part of the management team, to the achievement and maintenance of UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation standards.
  • To behave in accordance with the mandatory Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) codes of conduct, standards and ethics. To ensure that the staff within the section also behave in accordance with these codes.
  • Assist in fulfilling the departmental and managerial obligations required for staff training and, professional and personal development including all mandatory training.
