Job overview

This is an opportunity to work in a supportive team in a very busy DGH with a great reputation for training. The aim of this exciting post is to enable you to develop competences and engage in formal training in medical education while gaining further experience in General Surgery. You will be key to enhancing the training of foundation doctors, core surgical trainees and the wider multiprofessional team.

You will be working alongside several higher specialist trainees and will have opportunities to experience elective and emergency GI and general surgery (60% clinical duties) whilst also developing your skills in postgraduate education (40% educational time).

Main duties of the job

The post is split between clinical (60%) and educational (40%) work.

Clinical work will be at the level of an ST3 and involve on call duties and support of SAU, including ward work and support of F1s and core trainees.  You will also attend outpatient clinics and theatre sessions under supervision.

Educational work includes responsibility for the provision of a departmental induction and teaching programme for F1s in addition to supporting a developing programme of multiprofessional simulation.  You will also be involved in a range of other educational activities for the department.

You will need to have completed Foundation training or equivalent and core surgical training or equivalent, to have passed the MRCS and be capable to managing the surgical take at a junior registrar level with support from a consultant.

The Trust has a track record of providing excellent experience in similar posts within the Medical Directorate and they are very popular.  All previous incumbents of this post have gone on to secure training posts in General Surgery.

This is a great team and popular on the regional rotation due to the access to training opportunities and experience gained in a supportive environment.

You will be supported to do a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (or equivalent) whilst in post.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will have a clinical commitment which will include OPD, theatre and on call commitments, with the intention of splitting your time between clinical (40%) and educational (60%) activity.
Your educational commitment is likely to include:
o    Undertaking educational projects with the Surgical Division and College Tutors
o    Undertaking projects relating to technical skills simulation and multiprofessional simulation with the intention of achieving presentations at national conferences
o    Work with the consultant body to develop local faculty
o    Undertake teaching sessions for Foundation and Core trainees
o    Continue to organise virtual teaching and journal club sessions
