Job overview

Are you looking for a hands-on role in a hospital setting where you can make a directly impact patient care and contribute to the smooth running of hospital activities? We are seeking reliable and adaptable Waste Porters / Porters to join our team at Cheltenham General Hospital. This is a vital and varied role within the hospital, supporting the transportation of patients, equipment, and essential supplies.

There are two vacancies available:

1. 15 hours per week: Saturday & Sunday day shifts, 2 x 7.5 hours.

2. 37.5 hours per week: Monday - Friday day shifts, 5 x 7.5 hours

Main duties of the job

As a Waste Porter / Porter, you will play a key role in the daily operations of the hospital by performing essential tasks including:

- Waste Management: Safely and professionally collecting and disposing of waste throughout the hospital, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental protocols.

- Patient Transport: Safely transporting patients using wheelchairs, trolleys, stretchers, or beds, including escorting patients when required.

- Transport & Logistics: Moving medical records, specimens, pharmacy items, medical gases, and essential hospital supplies. Collecting and delivering hospital equipment, furniture, linen, waste, and blood products.

- Emergency & Clinical Support: Assisting in medical emergencies (e.g., cardiac arrests), helping with patient transfers, and transporting deceased patients to the mortuary with dignity

- Safety & Compliance: Conducting risk assessments on equipment before use, following infection control procedures, and adhering to health & safety protocols, including the safe handling of medical gases.

- Operational Duties: Driving departmental vehicles on-site, reporting equipment defects, and using IT systems for work-related tasks.

- Team Collaboration: Working closely with colleagues, supervisors, and managers to ensure high service standards and respond effectively to emergencies.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a physically demanding role requiring lifting and moving heavy loads. You will work both indoors and outdoors, often in challenging conditions, including cold, heat and exposure to unpleasant environments.

The role includes shift patterns, including nights, weekends and bank holidays as part of a rota. Key responsibilities include:

- Adhering to infection control and health & safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment for both staff and patients.

- Maintaining a high level of professionalism while transporting patients and handling sensitive situations, including medical emergencies and deceased patients.

- Collaborating effectively with your team and other departments to ensure efficient service delivery and patient care.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Maths GCSE (or equivalent)
  • English GCSE (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in Customer Services or a related field
  • NVQ Level 2 and competence-based qualifications in Healthcare Support Services

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in customer service
  • Experience working independently and as part of a team
  • Experience in manual handling
  • Experience using IT systems (including Microsoft Outlook)
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in portering or healthcare support services

Knowledge/ Skills

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety regulations
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to prioritise and manage workload.
  • IT Skills (including Microsoft Outlook).
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of infection control and waste policies
