Job overview

 

The role of the Nursery Nurse (NN) is to support the registered nurse in the delivery of safe, high quality care of babies on the Neonatal Unit. The Nursery Nurse will be a competent individual, working as a member of the Nursing team.  

The neonatal Unit at Princess Alexandra Hospital are looking for enthusiastic nursery nurses who are keen to help shape and change neonatal services. Join us on our journey to achieving Baby Friendly accreditation. 

Scope and range 

The Nursery Nurse will work both as a practitioner within their own right, and under the direct supervision and direction of the registered nurses. The Nursery Nurse will have expertise in caring for new born babies and working with families in the neonatal period, facilitating good standards of care. 

The Nursery Nurse will undertake a range of duties including: personal care of babies, providing information and advice on parenting skills and infant care, infant feeding, undertake a range of neonatal observations and clerical duties, to ensure the smooth running of the nursing team. 

Main duties of the job

  • To care for a group of neonates/babies, from their admission (as appropriate) through to their discharge, under the supervision of a senior staff member. 
  • To assist in the assessment, planning and evaluation of care plans for the babies on the SCBU/NNU, ensuring that the personal beliefs, identity and preferences of parents are acknowledged.
  • To follow specialised infant feeding care packages, making minor adjustments to the plan if necessary to meet the needs of the baby. To record and maintain fluid balance on feeding infant charts as required.
  • Support the teaching of parents and carers in essential parent craft.e.g. sterilization and safe preparation of artificial milk feeds, bathing.
  • Be able to respond in an emergency to maintain the safety of babies and their families.
  •  To comply with trust policy on infant security by checking that correct patient identification is followed by checking baby details and that tags/ankle labels are in place.
  • To provide caring support to mothers and babies and be able to cope with sensitive and emotional circumstances if they occur.
  • To adhere to Trust Safeguarding policies and procedures and participate in related mandatory/statutory supervision and training.
  • Maintain accurate, timely and factual records in compliance the Trust record keeping standard.
  • Provide activities and appropriate stimulation to support the developmental needs of babies.
