University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust have an extremely exciting opportunity to join the Surgery Division as Divisional Director of Operations. Reporting to the Chief of Service, this senior role is responsible for the performance of services, developing and implementing performance management strategies, and leading service developments that support the delivery of high quality and financially sustainable patient care. 

The role is to lead professional management of the division, and the scope of the role reflects the level of seniority of the post holder. We are seeking a motivated and influential leader who is partnership-led and who has significant experience engaging with stakeholders of all levels. We are looking to speak with driven leaders who have significant experience in operational leadership roles, and who have extensive experience managing a diverse portfolio with multi-million pound budgets.

We welcome applications from senior operational leaders who can demonstrate a strong track record of managing operational services in an NHS setting, improving performance, and delivering cost improvement programmes whilst maintaining high standards of patient care and clinical quality. The role would potentially suit an experienced operations director or an assistant director/head of service looking for their next career step in a large multisite acute Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Reporting to the Chief of Service, this senior role will manage a large clinical division to ensure that operational services are delivered and performance across all quality, access, people and financial domains is achieved. The role is the lead professional management of the division and the scope of the role reflects the level of seniority of the post holder.

The post holder will provide a significant contribution to the development and implementation of the Trust’s strategy as a whole. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that a safe and effective patient centred service is delivered at all times throughout the division in line with national and locally agreed standards and within our Patient First Strategy.

With support from the Hospital Directors and in collaboration with the Chief of Service and Divisional Director of Nursing, the post holder will develop a clear, detailed and shared understanding of the respective sites’ performance, flow and configuration and use this understanding to inform better operational decisions and the planning and prioritisation of change.

Experience and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent professional level
  • Masters degree relevant to role or equivalent knowledge and experience
  • Management qualification or additional short courses or experience to Doctorate level
  • Evidence of post qualifying and continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Post-graduate management qualification
  • Project Management/ Prince 2
  • MBA or equivalent

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive senior level manager experience within a complex health care organisation including management of multiple specialties
  • Experience of multi-agency planning and service delivery
  • Demonstrable recent experience as a senior manager within an NHS organisation managing multiple clinical services
  • Sound knowledge base of the NHS, current issues and developments, its structure, organisation and targets
  • Experience of project management and change management
  • A proven ability to obtain and consistently achieve results and targets
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of emergency planning and business continuity processes
  • Experience in clinical support services
  • Experience of managing high volume, high value contracts with external providers
