Job overview

We are looking for an experienced Therapeutic Radiographer to join our friendly multi-professional radiotherapy team at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.  Torbay delivers a range of techniques, including SABR and is actively engaged in research with both commercial and non-commercial trials. 

We are seeking someone who is enthusiastic, caring and a technical expert in delivering complex radiotherapy and with exemplary IGRT skills. You will be responsible for the efficient day to day management of the linear accelerator, deputising for the Treatment Section Manager as required.

Main duties of the job

A team leader responsible for the efficient day to day management of the linear accelerator, deputising for the Treatment Section Manager as required.

Technical expert in delivering complex radiotherapy and demonstrate expert problem solving skills in relation to patient set-ups and treatment delivery.

Have exemplary IGRT skills, being able to make complex decisions online relating to image matching and the ability to critically appraise a series of images to identify changing trends and take associate actions appropriately.

Provide support and guidance to your treatment team to include completing achievement reviews, one to ones, induction, training and development, 

Participate in QA, audit, research, initial complaints management and service development initiatives as appropriate. 

Support the Treatment Section Manager in implementing new techniques, technologies, research trials and assist in risk assessments.

Ensure the provision of a quality service which meets the needs of the individual patients.

Be responsible for initiating a response to reportable IRMER or IRR incidents within the service as required.

Support and mentor undergraduate students in training.

Working for our organisation

Our department comprising of two matched VERSA Elekta Linacs, Mosaiq Oncology Management System, Pinnacle Treatment Planning System (TPS), Limbus AI OAR outlining software and Canon Aquilion CT Scanner which was installed early 2024. The department actively participates in clinical trials. Lung SABR Treatment commenced in 2021 and we are expanding this to other body sites.

 

We have a Macmillan Support and Information Radiographer, Urology Specialist Radiographer, and Gynae/Colorectal Specialist Radiographer who have all undertaken independent prescribing. We have also been involved in the multi-award winning late effects project.

 

We have close working relationships with the Oncology research team which includes a Therapeutic Radiographer in a dedicated research role.

 

We have exciting future plans which involve implementing SGRT summer 2025, upgrading our current version of Mosaiq, implementation of EPIC electronic patient record and commissioning of a new TPS. Long term plans will involve preparing for back-to-back Linac replacement.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

HCPC registration as a therapeutic radiographer (requires BSc (Hons) in Radiotherapy or equivalent accredited programme)

Demonstrate good theoretical knowledge of a range of treatment techniques, advanced techniques, IGRT and planning

Ability to lead a team

Understand equality and diversity issues as they relate to staff and 
patients

Fitness for clinical role with high level of hand, eye and sensory co-ordination to ensure precise patient positioning and radiotherapy 
treatment delivery

Qualifications and Exprience

Essential criteria
  • HCPC registration as a Therapeutic radiographer
  • MSc qualification in clinical subject or equivalent experience
  • MSc qualification/training in management / leadership or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of continuous personal, professional and academic development
  • Extensive technical experience at Band 6 or above in delivering complex and simple radiotherapy
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities and an ability to motivate staff and build a team
  • Extensive problem-solving skills in relation to patient set-ups and treatment delivery
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of research / audit / service improvement publication
  • Teaching/lecturing at pre and post graduate level
