Job overview

Our fundraising manager provides specialist fundraising expertise for our Torbay and South Devon NHS Charity. They are an integral part of our small Charity team, responsible for the development and delivery of our fundraising strategy.

 

Central to this role is a strong working relationship with Charity and communications colleagues as well as fund managers, donors and others, requiring the post holder to be at the centre of a wide inter-departmental network, aimed at maximising the benefit to people who use our services by helping to make things better.

 

While working as part of a small professional Charity team and alongside colleagues from our Corporate Trustee, the post holder will be expected to work independently and autonomously, working within guidelines and Charity Law to lead on building our supporter base, meeting agreed fundraising targets and diversifying and developing income streams.

Main duties of the job

  • ·       Our fundraising manager will assist in the smooth day to day running of our Torbay and South Devon NHS Charity, leading our fundraising team and function. They will raise the profile of our Charity and act as our Charity’s representative in negotiations and relationships with third parties, acting at all times in good faith and in an ethical manner.
  • ·       The duties include the development and delivery of our Fundraising Strategy and our Charity annual workplan, providing fundraising advice to fund managers and senior managers in the development of business cases for grant applications
  • ·       Our fundraising manager will be responsible for meeting agreed fundraising targets and developing new income streams while maximising the effectiveness of established methods. They will plan, manage and deliver a programme of successful campaigns and appeals that encourage new donors and retain and inspire our existing supporter
  • ·       They will create a meaningful supporter care journey and information materials that sensitively and effectively inform our supporters about ways to contribute to our Charity through leaving a legacy and donating in memory of loved ones
  • ·       They will support compliance with Charity Commission policy and procedures as well as compliance with our key NHS policies and procedures including monitoring and evaluation and the recording and monitoring of grants.

  • Create, develop and foster positive, long-lasting relationships with donors, executors, solicitors, local businesses, trust members and the wider local community
  • Develop strong relationships with internal clinical, operational and corporate teams to ensure the benefits of the Charity are delivered and raise the profile of the Charity internally
  • Possess a keen attention to detail with exceptional written, verbal and interpersonal skills for highly professional proposal and report writing with strong presentation skills – presenting to, influencing and educating donors on a range of fundraising initiatives
  • Required to motivate, negotiate, persuade and influence others to drive income performance forward
  • Be a regular and confident speaker to give talks and make presentations to local businesses and commercial organisations to help increase support for the Charity
  • Research and cultivate relationships with local businesses and local branches of national companies to identify best prospects to income generate for the Charity
  • Present quarterly reports on fundraising and performance to the Charity Committee – and as required to the Board of Directors. Present emergency briefs to the Associate Director of Communications and partnerships as and when needed to immediately address any issues and determine suitable plans of action and/or mitigation
  • Work closely with the Charity Committee to understand and support ongoing priorities for grant giving. Ensure that bids are well prepared and fully costed prior to submissions for approval to the Charity Committee
  • Work closely with the communications team to raise the profile of completed bids, good news stories and case studies, to build on and drive further donations
  • Ensure effective systems for involving donors in the planning of service developments
  • Liaise with external organisations and agencies on a regular basis to discuss joint projects for development
  • To lead complex and sensitive negotiations with potential major donors, using developed persuasive and negotiating communications skills
  • Networking with other Charity fundraising professionals to improve our Charity’s systems and practices
  • Working with the Charity team to plan and oversee all the Charity’s income generation, including service contracts, fundraising and social businesses
  • Provide expert advice on fundraising and associated matters to managers and executives as required
  • ·       Lead the delivery and development of the fundraising strategy for the Charity ensuring congruence with the Trust organisational strategy and the Charity’s strategy
  • ·       Act as a representative of the Charity in negotiations and relationships with third parties
  • ·       Monitor monthly performance indicators for fundraising / income generation and where necessary prepare and manage corrective actions
  • ·       Identify cost improvements, service developments and income generation opportunities as appropriate
  • ·       Monitor, control and report on activity against expenditure, working with finance and charity colleagues to ensure the delivery of balanced budgets
  • ·       Produce regular fundraising performance reports for the Associate Director of Communications and Partnerships
  • ·       Undertake research into grant-giving/Trusts/Foundations to make a judgement as to whether an application would be successful
  • ·       Provide specialist advice relating to income generation, strategy and operational planning
  • ·       Prepare and write the Charity Annual Report
  • ·       Exercise judgement and make recommendations on priorities and income generating performance
  • ·       Support grant applications in preparation of business cases and monitor the performance and impact of grants
  • ·       Manage time and resources by prioritising and organising effectively a broad range of complex activities and workload for self and others
  • ·       Continual adjustment of plans as appropriate through monitoring of target achievement
  • ·       Increase the depth of Charity brand awareness and profile to all relevant audiences
  • ·       In lien with the Charity strategy and working closely with the Associate Director of Communications and Partnerships, identify, assess, support and develop effective grant making programmes that deliver a tangible impact for the Trust
  • ·       Prepare and oversee the fundraising team’s annual workplan and events calendar, ensuring that fundraising income targets are met, that our fundraising activities are inclusive and engaging and demonstrating a return on investment
  • ·       Flexibility and ability to respond quickly to changing priorities and ability to deliver actions to required level in agreed timescales
  • ·       Under the direction of the Associate Director of Communications and Partnerships, develop business cases and other proposals for service improvement in partnership with clinical and charity colleagues
  • ·       Prepare legacy income plans in partnership with charity/finance colleagues and fund manager
  •      In collaboration with the communications team, produce communications and marketing materials (eg press releases, newsletters, donor communications) promoting the Charity to existing and potential supporter
  • ·    Prepare and oversee appropriate and timely fundraising materials and collateral including website copy, printed materials, events, social media and PR
  •      Ensure follow up and evaluation of all major grants awarded and develop effective case studies which can be used to promote ongoing and future support, including legacies
  •      Ensure communications plans for each class of donor are clearly understood and managed

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent gained through extensive fundraising experience
  • Qualifications and/or equivalent experience in fundraising
  • 5 x GCSE grade C or above or equivalent, including Mathematics and English Language
  • Experience of planning and implementing fundraising plans and campaigns across a range of platforms
  • Experience of developing and implementing successful legacy strategies
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and the ability to communicate persuasively, through various appropriate communication methods with diverse stakeholders and audiences
  • Ability to analyse and judge complex facts and information for inclusion in fundraising communications in a way that is appropriate to the audience and maintains the reputation of the organisation
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills in order to work to strict deadlines, achieve objectives, co-ordinate and prioritise several tasks concurrently
  • High level of IT competency – including Microsoft Office products and advance keyboard skills for designing publications and presentations. Able to manage our content management system Donofy
  • Knowledge of information sources for research and scanning purposes and ability to analyse complex information
  • Confidence in dealing with members of the public and in presenting information and public speaking to large groups
