Job overview

Work within the Specialist Learning Disability Team both autonomously and jointly with members of the team 

Hold a Clinical caseload and be expected to provide a variety of assessments and interventions for children and young people on an individual or group basis in a community setting.

Deliver specialist assessment and support within the PBS framework to a client group of children and young people experiencing a range of difficulties including those whose behaviour is perceived as challenging or a concern. This position may also form part of the Early Intervention Offer for the pathway. 

Using a strengths-based approach; ensure clinical effectiveness using evidence-based interventions, goal-based, collaborative practice and Routine Outcome Measures

Main duties of the job

 Provide Specialist Learning Disability advice and support to other professionals working within the model of a Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) framework.

 To work with the PBS-Team Lead and other key people to identify opportunities for service development

 Provide a range of early help interventions across pathways such as emotional health and well-being, communication issues, including parent support/resilience.

 Support individuals and their families to promote a model of self-management of their own health and wellbeing.

 Facilitate Specialist Workshops in areas such as Understanding Behaviour that challenges.

Supervise and support Band 5 Learning Disability Nurses & Band 4 Learning Disability Support Assistants. 

Mentor and contribute to the training and development of newly qualified and new staff members.

Participate in the provision of student placements.

To promote and support participation of service users across the service, ensuring the voice of the Child or Young Person with a Learning Disability is heard, using adapted communication when required.

Work across other geographical areas as required to support colleagues according to need and demand.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To be an excellent communicator, demonstrating empathy and facilitating an inclusive and collaborative working relationship with all stakeholders and ensuring assessments and plans are meaningful to patients and their families

To communicate complex condition-related information from assessment to carers, families and members of the multidisciplinary team/other professions in a way that is accessible and easily understood. This will include developing strategies for people with communication disorders where barriers to understanding may exist.

To demonstrate empathy with patients, carers, families and colleagues, ensuring that effective communication is achieved, particularly where barriers to communication exist, or sensitive issues are being dealt with. Patient, carers and family may have difficulty accepting the information provided.

To form productive relationships with others who may be under stress and/or have challenging difficulties.

To employ good presentation skills to promote multi-disciplinary and interagency liaison and collaborative practice to a broad range of audiences including other professionals and users.

To write reports reflecting knowledge of Positive Behaviour Support, paediatrics and learning disability that can be accessible to both lay and professional people.

To contribute to clinical pathways both multi and uni-professional by discussing own and others input around patient’s needs, ensuring a well-coordinated plan of care.

To deal with initial complaints sensitively, avoiding escalation where possible.

To demonstrate good negotiation skills across a range of issues.

To be empathetic and reassuring in all communications.

To communicate effectively with children and young people including the use of total communication techniques, e.g. sign language, PECS or communication aids. To include writing bespoke reports and letters in a way that is accessible to everyone

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • PBS Degree/Diploma or ABA completed or in progress
  • Experience in Learning Disability
  • • Experience of undertaking functional assessments to inform Positive Behaviour Support plans.
  • • Excellent knowledge of the PBS framework/model.
Desirable criteria
  • • Teaching / training experience
  • • Knowledge and evidence of implementation of therapeutic assessments and interventions relevant to Children and Young People
  • • Experience of developing resources to support positive behavioural changes
  • • Partnership working experience
