South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has an exciting fellowship opportunity based in the Northern Region. The post will be based within the Perioperative Medicine and Critical Care Group at South Tees Hospitals for a period of 12 months, commencing in August 2025 (or as soon after as feasible). A range of cutting-edge Quality Improvement and academic opportunities will be available to the successful applicant.. The post will provide out-of-programme experience, with applicants required to hold the first part of the FRCA qualification (or equivalent). Any applicant must have the full support from their school or deanery prior to application (as appropriate). The post is also suitable for post-CCT applicants.

This post will provide an exciting opportunity to be involved in the departments nationally recognised research programme involving a range of opportunities in perioperative medicine..

Clinical commitment

There is a Clinical service commitment inclusive of a 1 in 4, weekend daytime anaesthetic on call cover at Friarage Hospital, Northallerton. This will require independent practice with distant supervision and the ability to arrange and provide safe inter hospital transfer of unwell patients. Anaesthetic cover at Friarage Hospital provides emergency airway, resuscitation and transfer support for the acute medical unit and inpatient care only. Further out of hours on-call in support of the James Cook University anaesthesia rota tiers may be required to a maximum overall on-call

Perioperative Services Directorate

You will join a department consisting of 80 Consultants (including military) and 8 SAS grade doctors who form the Directorate of Anaesthesia across the two sites.  In addition, there are Residents in anaesthesia who rotate within the Northern School of Anaesthesia (Northern Deanery) and also locally employed Anaesthetists (These include those working on portfolio pathway towards becoming a consultant).  The department provides anaesthesia for a full range of tertiary services and was recently awarded Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation (ACSA) by the Royal College of Anaesthetists, reflecting excellence in all areas of delivery.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC Registration (including current license to practice)
  • ALS or equivalent
  • Current Transfer Training certification
Desirable criteria
  • Components of FRCA Primary examination

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Completion of Royal College of Anaesthetist’s "Initial Assessment of Competence" and "Initial Assessment of Competence in Obstetric Anaesthesia" (Or equivalent)
  • Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems as an anaesthetist
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of active interest in quality improvement
