Job overview

Hywel Dda University Health Board is looking to appoint an innovative, proactive and compassionate Occupational Therapist to join our Children and Young People’s Occupational Therapy Service.  This is an exciting opportunity to join our team as the Clinical Lead for Occupational Therapy within the Pembrokeshire area with an area of clinical specialism which will be agreed upon appointment.

You will be expected to work as an integral part of the Occupational Therapy Service for Children and Young People delivering a high quality, evidence-based occupational therapy to children from birth up to eighteen years of age (nineteen if there is a diagnosed learning disability and the young person is attending specialist education). 

As clinical lead, you will work closely with the Service Lead Occupational Therapist and an experienced team of Clinical Lead Occupational Therapists.  You will be responsible for the delivery of Occupational Therapy services for Children and Young People within the Pembrokeshire area.  You will also support the delivery and development of the service across the footprint of the Health Board.

 

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to carry a complex caseload working within clinic, education and home environments and will be required to liaise closely with staff within the Local Authority as part of a joint working agreement.

You will also be required to liaise with professional networks across Wales and the United Kingdom relating to your area of specialism as part of both service development, clinical governance and to improve clinical practice. 

The post holder will also be expected to offer training and support to the wider Occupational Therapy Service for Children and Young People, supervise staff and offer clinical placements to support the development of occupational therapy students within Wales.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is an exciting time to join our service as we re-design and develop innovative ways of delivering services to children and young people with a wide range of occupational therapy needs equitably across the three large geographical areas covered by the Health Board.  The successful post holder will support the existing patient focussed pathways along with developing new pathways where required, including within the agreed area of specialism. 

Applications are invited from occupational therapists with demonstrable experience in working within paediatric occupational therapy.

The post holder will be expected to travel across the Health Board footprint with mileage allowance payable.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Degree/Diploma in Occupational Therapy
  • Professional registration as recognised by HCPC
  • Evidence of attendance on specialist short courses and advanced training up to Master's level equivalent e.g. Sensory Integration, training in posture management, Bobath
  • Possess highly specialist knowledge underpinned by current evidence-based practice
Desirable criteria
  • MSc or post graduate diploma level training in relevant area. This could include Masters modules e.g. Sensory Integration
  • Splinting and its application to children and young people
  • Fieldwork Education Training
  • Member of BAOT
  • Leadership training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive post - graduate experience, including relevant experience with children & young people
  • Managing a complex caseload
  • Inter-professional and multi-agency team working
  • Direct involvement with carers and families
  • Negotiation of service development
  • Evidence of supporting service compliance with clinical governance requirements
  • Therapeutic handling and risk assessments in relation to care including complex children and young people
  • Experience of appropriate delegation, supervision and oversight of staff
  • Evidence of teaching/In Service Training
