Job overview
To determine the immune correlates of successful radiotherapy response in patients with head and neck cancer.
To work with laboratory scientists in the Division of Infection and Immunity at CU supervised by Professor Awen Gallimore (CRUK Programme Grant holder), and the Head and Neck Multidisciplinary Team supervised by Professor Mererid Evans (Director, Wales Cancer Research Centre).
To oversee the delivery of novel and/or complex clinical trials at the Cardiff Cancer Research Hub (CCRH), the ‘front door’ to translational cancer research in Cardiff.
This post is fixed term for 2 years to meet the needs of the service.
Main duties of the job
Co-funded by Velindre Charitable Funds and the Wales Cancer Research Centre (WCRC), this Clinical Research Fellowship will be focused on 'Determining the immune correlates of successful radiotherapy response in patients with head and neck cancer’.
The post holder will be supported to undertake a higher research degree (MD) and the Fellowship will provide an opportunity for an oncology trainee to undertake a dedicated period of research during their training, equipping them with the skills, knowledge and links to become future cancer research leaders in Wales.

Qualifications and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Qualified Medical Practitioner
- MRCP
- Full GMC Registration and License to Practise
Desirable criteria
- MSc, BSc or FRCR (Part 1 and 2)
- Knowledge of grant applications
- Knowledge of process through R&D for clinical trials
Experience
Essential criteria
- Oncology experience to STR level
- Clinical experience in managing outpatient and inpatient oncology patients
- Oncology experience including exposure to the principles of managing patients participating in cancer clinical trials
- Skills in preparing and delivering presentations and reports
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in or managing acute oncology patients
- Proven ability to manage own time and deliver a range of tasks to deadlines
- IT skills particularly in the use of MS office applications
- Analytical skills – able to analyse and present complex research data, in a range of formats to a variety of audiences
