Pharmacy Messenger

 

Department: Pharmacy

 

Band 2, Part-time £23,615 per annum pro rata

 

Hours: 22.5 hours per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

 

It’s an exciting time to join the pharmacy team at  MKUH; we are continually growing & have a modern main pharmacy department, pharmacy aseptic suite & pharmacy outpatient unit.  Within our main pharmacy we also have a state-of-the-art dispensing robot, which supplies most of our medicines.

To support the pharmacy team, we require a Pharmacy Messenger to work 3 days per week Tuesday to Thursday.  You will join our team of 4 Pharmacy Messengers & our Senior Pharmacy Messenger.  All our messengers work 7.5 hour shifts between the hours of 8:30am & 7:00pm on rotation and 1 in 5 Saturday working.  The successful applicant will participate in the following duties:

  • Liaise with our ward pharmacists & technicians via mobile phone for the collection & delivery of urgent items from wards
  • Ensure that medication & bulk intravenous fluids are delivered promptly to wards and departments
  • Loading of our pharmacy robot

 The successful applicant will need to demonstrate the ability to work under pressure & have good organisational skills.

Main duties of the job

  • To perform, under supervision, all types of pharmaceutical work appropriate to the level of knowledge and experience, in order to participate in the provision of pharmaceutical services to hospital patients and staff.
  • To participate in the work of the Pharmacy messengers to enable a safe and efficient collection and delivery service for Pharmacy to all wards and departments within the hospital.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Trust responsibilities:

  • To be part of the dispensary and stores teams and work with staff within the pharmacy department and across the trust to enable the objectives of the Trust to be achieved.

Professional responsibilities:

  • To cooperate with managers to ensure the Pharmacy department is compliant with relevant statutory and professional standards on Health & Safety, COSHH, Clinical Governance, and Medicines Management.

Main operational responsibilities:

  • To provide a safe and secure delivery service for Controlled Drugs to wards and departments.  Ensure that Controlled Drugs are handed to a member of nursing staff and are signed for.
  • Delivery of pharmacy bags from the dispensary, to all wards and departments, including external units such as Marlborough House and the Campbell Centre, ensuring the delivery books or other records are completed with all the necessary information.

Other operational duties:

  • To correctly dispose of domestic and recyclable waste.
  • To safely dispose of pharmaceutical waste in accordance with the required Standard Operating Procedure.

Miscellaneous:

  • To co-operate with staff in other disciplines to help ensure the safe, effective and economic use of drugs.

Qualifications and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grade C or above including English & Mathematics

Experience
