Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and an approved plan to build a brand new, state of the art Emergency Department which commenced in 2021

Job overview

The role is part of our Inclusion pathway within the  Healthy Child Programme Service 0-19 which incorporates Health Visiting, School Nursing and Teenage Pregnancy Services. It is an exciting time to join our service and be part of developing and shaping services for babies, children, young people and their families.

This exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, motivated and compassionate qualified nurse to join our  developing pathway which reflects the need to be increase capacity to provide care and support  young people who are in the Youth Justice system, to improve their health outcomes and life chances.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as part of a School Nursing team which is led by a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN –SN). The role will play a key part in delivering the Health Child Programme (HCP 5-19) to children and young people with alternative provision schools, other educational setting or those who are home educated. This includes holding and managing your own caseload, contributing to the development and delivery of health education programmes and staff training and working as part of wider multi-disciplinary and agency teams to prevent ill health, promote health & wellbeing, provide early intervention and safeguard children and young people.

A new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre, opened in March 2023, has significantly improved emergency care facilities and capacity, providing almost 5,000 square metres of additional clinical space.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To work with multi-disciplinary professionals relating to school nursing and the youth justice system.

To manage your own caseload, identifying and responding to priorities. To plan, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care.

Contribute to the development, delivery and evaluation of health education programmes and staff training

To provide clinical advice and support to the team, provide caseload supervision, 1-1’s and PDR’s for junior staff. Provide learning opportunities, induction, and preceptorship for all learners.

Contribute to the development of, implement and evaluate new and existing policies ensuring that practice is evidence-based.

Maintain clinical governance processes, e.g., identification & management of risks and incidents

To co-ordinate and/or contribute to the health needs assessment of children under the care of the team, participating in the multi-disciplinary and multi-agency assessment & intervention of/for children & young people. 

To provide clinical advice and support, on aspects of care for children & young people to families and colleagues within the teams, integrated team, and other agencies.

Take the lead professional/key worker role for children & young people when appropriate and work as part of multi-agency teams to support those on child protection, child in need and early help plans or those who are looked after.

To advocate for families within the multidisciplinary team and make referrals as appropriate.

To work closely with schools and education provisions and provide advice and support to parents and staff where children or young people have identified health needs.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • SCPHN School Nursing or an RN with demonstrable experience of working with children and young people delivering the healthy child programme
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Evidence of additional qualification or demonstratable of development of knowledge/skills through experience in a specialist area of support e.g., children not in education and training, under the care of the youth justice

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • In-depth knowledge of child health of 5-19’s and development
  • Detailed knowledge of health and social care policy relating to children’s services to include education, public health and safeguarding
  • Knowledge of working with under represented groups or those in challenging situations e.g., young people in youth justice, not in education or training, in pupil referral unit or alternative education places
  • Demonstrable experience of conducting holistic, person centred health assessments and planning care
  • Demonstrable of managing your own caseload.
  • Demonstrable experience of public health interventions

  • The ability to present information in an accessible format, having good presentation and skills
  • Highly developed, effective interpersonal and communication skills
