Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and an approved plan to build a brand new, state of the art Emergency Department which commenced in 2021

Job overview

The post holder will also support the Anticoagulation service in carrying out blood sampling and testing for housebound clients, this will involve direct care with clients (within their own homes, or care homes) who have been admitted to the care of Anticoagulation Service. They will also be required to support the Anticoagulation Nurses in providing sampling and testing of blood within the anticoagulation clinics held in various sites across Walsall.

Main duties of the job

To carry out phlebotomy duties within Community setting working within outlined lower-level clinical competencies and Trust protocols, as directed by the CNS anticoagulation.

To undertake testing of blood using Near Patient testing equipment and be responsible for documenting findings.

To independently travel to various clinics and to patient’s home environments to undertake sampling and testing as required. 

To inform the nursing team of all changes in relation to patient care.

To correctly identify patients and to label blood samples obtained appropriately. 

Demonstrate excellent communication skills with clients, relatives, carers and colleagues. 

Maintain excellent written and electronic patient records 

To undertake appropriate risk assessments and take the appropriate action which may avoid foreseeable harm occurring to patients in their own home

Walsall Manor houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and the continued upgrading of existing areas ensures the Trust now has a state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit facilities. 

A new Urgent Emergency Care Centre was opened in March 2023. The two-storey development has significantly improved emergency care facilities and capacity and has provided almost 5,000 square metres of additional clinical space.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To carry out phlebotomy duties within Community setting working within outlined lower-level clinical competencies and Trust protocols, as directed by the CNS anticoagulation.

To undertake testing of blood using Near Patient testing equipment and be responsible for documenting findings.

To independently travel to various clinics and to patient’s home environments to undertake sampling and testing as required.

The post holder will highlight risk and changes in patient’s circumstances/condition by effective communication with registered practitioners.

To inform the nursing team of all changes in relation to patient care.

To check and maintain stocks of materials and consumables.

To correctly identify patients and to label blood samples obtained appropriately.

To dispose of sharps safely following Walsall healthcare policy guidelines.

To be responsible for the safe storage of blood samples obtained until transported to the Walsall Manor Hospital laboratory.

Demonstrate excellent communication skills with clients, relatives, carers and colleagues.

Have an understanding of the roles of the multidisciplinary team and support services available within the community.

Maintain excellent written and electronic patient records

To work in partnership with patients, relatives and carers and the wider multi-disciplinary team.

To support and enable clients to maintain their health needs.

To undertake appropriate risk assessments and take the appropriate action which may avoid foreseeable harm occurring to patients in their own home.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent qualification and/or relevant experience
Desirable criteria
  • Current experience of working within health/social care setting
