Medical Laboratory Assistant - Band 2

The Cellular Pathology department has a vacancy for a Medical Laboratory Assistant within the Histology department at band 2. 

This is a busy department, servicing two hospitals Royal Berkshire and Wexham Park  with a combined  workload of 55,000 Histology specimens per annum, and 5,000 non-Gynae specimens, performing a wide range 
of Immunohistochemistry techniques and OSNA. We have full UKAS accreditation.  Located at the University of Reading on the White Knights Campus in new laboratory spaces. 

We are looking for a candidate who is a competent and versatile individual with excellent team working and communication skills and must be 
able to work with accuracy at all times. 

Previous experience in a Histology environment is not essential as training will be given but would be an advantage.

Main duties of the job

Duties include supporting junior doctors within the gross dissection lab with block preparation for cutting , some specimen reception, assisting scientific and medical staff in filing blocks and slides, receiving, and stock controlling and making up  chemical solutions.

Entering patient data into laboratory LIMs.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post-holder is responsible of:

  • Participate in the provision of an efficient and cost effective Histology service within Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services. 
  • Assist in the preparation of tissue samples for both routine and special techniques efficiently and in a conscientious manner with respect to work 
    pressures and quality of the service. 
  • Assist with other members of staff to provide an efficient and effective service to all users of the Histopathology Department.

Essential criteria
  • At Least 5 GCSES including english maths and sciences
  • Experience of using computer systems
  • Experince in working in a team

  • NHS experience
