Job overview

We are currently looking for enthusiastic phlebotomists to work in our very busy department

Part  time Phlebotomist post  20 hours

7 day per week phlebotomy service. To include 2 weekends a month

You will be working cross sites in the Phlebotomy,  Outpatients and Ward In-Patients departments at Bedford Hospital and Gilbert Hitchcock House

You will be part of a developing team working in a very busy and essential area of the Bedford Hospitals Trust.

This is a Band 2 post working 20 hours pw including 2 weekends a month

 Saturday/ Sunday and Bank Holidays 

Appropriate In House training will be given to the right candidates.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a person to join a well establish team to undertake phlebotomy duties in Out-patient departments and throughout the Trust as directed. The Key Responsibilities of the post are: to participate in the routine phlebotomy service, working alone as required and prioritising work accordingly; to be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene. Undertake training for prevention and control of infection; to manage a large throughput of patients, treating each as an individual and ensuring that the correct number and type of blood containers are used; and, to behave professionally at all times.

Previous experience of phlebotomy work is preferred

Duties will include:

•    Taking blood samples from Outpatients and In Patients.
•    Carrying out general departmental duties.
•    To label blood samples as directed in the adult and paediatric venepuncture clinical guidelines.  
•    To ensure blood samples are correctly packaged by staff for transportation to the path lab.   
•    To clean and sterile the working areas
•    To maintain Statutory Training as required for the role
•    To carry out routine stock taking and monitor stock levels. 
•    To adhere to infection control policies. 
•    To assist in anticoagulation clinics if required.

Essential criteria
  • Good general education
Desirable criteria
  • Certificate of competence in phlebotomy

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience working in a Phlebotomy department.
Desirable criteria
  • Awareness and understanding of health safety protocols
  • Previous experience working with patients in a caring environment

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Able to communicate accurately and concisely with patients, their carers/relatives and other members of staff
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy procedures in a competent manner

Personal skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to work as part of a team and accept direction from senior or more experienced staff.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks where appropriate. Able to write clearly and accurately
  • Able to communicate accurately and concisely with patients, their carers/relatives and other members of staff.
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy procedures in a competent manner
