Are you passionate about improving the health and wellbeing of children and young people in care? We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate Children in Care Nurse to join our supportive and specialist Children in Care Health Team.

The Children in Care Health Team (CIC) provides specialist health input for all Children in Care aged 0–18 across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. This includes Initial and Review Health Assessments, referrals to other services according to identified health needs, and support to those placed in the area from other local authorities under agreed arrangements.

As a nurse working within the CIC team, you will provide a focused health service for children and young people aged 5 to 18, working closely with the Named Nurse for Children in Care.

Please note that due to the nature of this post you must have a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for work purposes. 

We have the following posts available on a permanent basis:

  • 22.5 hours a week
  • 30 hours per week 

Main duties of the job

The purpose of this role is to contribute to the work of the CIC Health Team by providing  nursing input for the 5 to 19 age range, working closely with the Named Nurse. The post-holder will: 

1.       Plan and deliver Review Health Assessments for 5 to 18 year olds as allocated. This includes completing health summary and action plan; reviewing the action plan after 3 months. Produce a follow up letter to the young person and carer as required.     

2.       Provide sexual health advice and services to young people in the LAC population.

3.       Provide health information to Care Experienced young people using the Health Passport.

4.       Attend meetings and participate in events involving Looked After Children as agreed with the Named Nurse for LAC.

5.       Work closely with social workers, CAMHS, and other partners to meet the needs of Looked After Children and Young People and improve their health outcomes.

6.       Participate in peer  supervision within the LAC team and receive line management from the band 7 Nurse for CIC

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Holds recognised qualification in first level registered nursing as recognised by the NMC
  • Safeguarding Children Training at Level 3
Desirable criteria
  • Public Health Qualification

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • An understanding of statutory/local policies and procedures including vulnerable children,
  • NMC Code of Conduct, PCT policies/values
  • A knowledge of Guidance / Research relating to Children in Care particularly health needs
  • Relevant experience in children and young people’s nursing/health field
  • Ability to communicate with engage with & advocate for Children & Young People in care
Desirable criteria
  • Mental Health knowledge
  • Knowledge of the statutory responsibilities for children in care
  • Public Health knowledge or experience
