Main duties of the job

Applications are invited for a Senior Fellow post on the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Team at University Hospital Southampton. 

This is an exciting opportunity to join our dynamic team of fourteen congenital cardiologists in the highly rewarding specialty of congenital cardiology. The unit offers a supra-regional service for the management of adult congenital heart patients in the South of England and covers all relevant clinical sub-specialties including cardiac obstetric services, electrophysiology, complex imaging, devices, interventional catheter based procedures and a full ACHD surgical program. There is an opportunity for training in Cardiac MRI. 

The successful applicant should possess Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health or equivalent post graduate qualification and should be registered with the GMC.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Senior Fellow will be required to undertake transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography with training in congenital heart disease provided.  Training will be given in congenital cardiac catheterisation, pacemaker and arrhythmia management and electrophysiology in congenital heart disease appropriate to the Fellow’s training needs. An opportunity to develop skills in congenital cardiac MRI can also be provided with a specific focus on these skills as part of the training program. 

For those trainees with a paediatric background, non-congenital adult cardiology may be an important part of their training. There is a regular teaching programme consisting of case presentations, topic discussions, journal club and echo review meetings.  Excellent opportunities are available for training in all aspects of congenital heart disease. 


As a major university centre of excellence, the unit is at the forefront of research activity and the new postholder will be expected to actively participate in research and audit with dedicated time allocated for this. 

Additional Information 

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).   
Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.  


Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. 


Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)     

Basic Salary – MT04  £61,825       

Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview  

Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.  

Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.
