Job overview

It is a critical time for our organization to develop and grow our commercial activities to generate positive returns to the Trust which can be invested directly into patient care. The timing is perfect for a passionate, creative and driven leader to join Newcastle Hospital’s Commercial Team as a Senior Commercial Business Manager to support the implementation of the Trust’s Commercial Strategy. 

This is a senior post within the Business, Research Innovation and Commercial Directorate and the role will be responsible for growing commercial activity and income for the Trust relating to Private and International Healthcare specifically, but not exclusively, working with colleagues in the Trust and organisations both within the UK and overseas.

Main duties of the job

The post will report to the Assistant Director – Service and Business Development and is a key member of the Business, Research, Innovation and Commercial Directorate team. You will contribute strongly to maximizing commercial opportunities and income generation working across the organization, and with partners, to deliver the Private and International Healthcare pillar of the Commercial Strategy.

You will bring experience of a variety of commercial activities and have proven ability in: assessing customer needs; providing up-to date market analysis; defining routes to market; developing pricing strategies and developing business cases.  You will have the ability to build effective working relationships with a wide range of internal and external colleagues and strategic partners to translate the Commercial Strategy into deliverable plans.

You will have experience of operating at a senior manager level in a complex organization.  Suitable candidates will have senior commercial experience gained within multi-disciplinary private sector organisations from the healthcare or life sciences field.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To take a leading role within Business, Research, Innovation and Commercial, with line management responsibility for the Private and International Patient Business Office to drive the generation of revenue from commercial opportunities (CO).
  • To provide hands on commercial expertise to the Trust. This would include working with the Private and International Patient Business Office, assessing customer needs, providing up-to-date market analysis, defining commercialisation route and relationship of the opportunity to the Trust and developing business cases.
  • To set up and define a project prioritisation process which is aligned with the Commercial Unit’s vision and mission.
  • To manage a pipeline of COs and provide Assistant Director - Service and Business Development up-to-date and concise status reports, ideally using a visual dashboard methodology.
  • Working alongside the Assistant Director, take a leading role in the development and implementation of a strategic approach to maximising income generation and inward investment, bringing a commercial approach to external investment from collaborative joint ventures and other sources.
  • With Colleagues, take responsibility for:
  • Implementing a strategy to manage Intellectual Property (IP) in the Trust, supporting new company formation and/or licencing, as appropriate.
  • Developing and deploying a range of commercial partners to meet the needs of our educational, training and workforce development activities.
  • Drive and promote the NuTH Brand and reputation, identify, developing and managing initiatives to win and grow commercial activity and income for the Trust.

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • Degree level education supplemented by postgraduate qualifications or significant relevant experience equivalent to a Master’s Degree level in an area of healthcare and or business development

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive senior commercial experience gained within multi-discipline large private sector organisations from the healthcare or life sciences field
  • Good understanding of Project Management
  • Successful track record at a senior management level in a complex organisation for a significant period. Highly developed understanding of health service issues and knowledge of the NHS

Skills & Abilities

  • Proven ability to lead and develop multidisciplinary and large teams within a commercial environment
  • A proven ability to research, analyse and assess company performance and future prospects based on market analysis, and company financial information
  • IT literacy, with the ability to produce high quality documents, presentations and financial models
  • Ability to work under pressure, managing multiple projects to tight deadlines
  • Adaptability and flexibility; capable of effectively dealing with high degrees of ambiguity and establishing a direction for others
  • Able to analyse complex problems and deliver practical, pragmatic, focussed results
  • Ability to work autonomously, with creativity, drive and flexibility
