Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team as a consultant neonatologist to serve a multicultural population of Northeast London. Queen’s Hospital Neonatal Unit is one of the largest Local Neonatal Unit in UK. Our neonatal services support a delivery rate of 7300 per year with a neonatal admission rate of 600 per year and 1000-1200 bed days per month. The unit has state of the art equipment, allowing use of any mode of ventilation. We offer therapeutic hypothermia to eligible newborns prior to transfer to tertiary centres. We take pride in achieving Baby Friendly accreditation in April 2024. 

We have a close working relationship with Homerton and Royal London Hospital neonatal units, as well as other London network units. We work collaboratively with Maternity, Fetal Medicine and Paediatric teams. We encourage research activities. Our unit is a recognised NLS centre. 

We have a dedicated 3-tier medical rota. The team is warm and friendly with high staff retention. The medical and nursing team is supported by an AHP team of dietician, speech and language therapist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist and a perinatal psychotherapist. 

We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague to join us and contribute his/her expertise across inpatient and outpatient areas. The successful candidate will have ample opportunity to grow skills, develop an area of interest and get challenged in managing a wide range of complex pathologies regularly presenting in the department.   

 

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be responsible for running the neonatal service at BHRUT with the existing neonatal consultants working with the multidisciplinary team. The post holder will join the current consultant team to make the rota 1:7 and work within the team job plan, as summarised below. The postholder will be expected to support the neonatal lead with clinical governance, perinatal optimisation and safety champion activities. 

Week 1 - NICU (Hot week’ with prospective cover)

Week 2 - SCBU 1 (Hot week’ with prospective cover

Week 3 - SCBU 2/postnatal ward

Week 4 - Clinic/admin/SPA/CG/Special interest/Teaching

Week 5 – Clinic/admin/SPA/CG/Special interest/Teaching

Week 6 – Clinic/admin/SPA/CG/Special interest/Teaching

Week 7 - Clinic/admin/SPA/CG/Special interest/Teaching

Consultants are expected to undertake twice daily ward rounds on the neonatal

unit. The hot-week consultant holds the crash bleep and attends neonatal emergencies. During non-hot-weeks, consultants undertake clinics and administrative tasks. During these weeks consultants also provide teaching and training to juniors, update guidelines, undertake audits and clinical governance activities etc. 

Consultants also attend departmental meetings, link meetings, serious incident review meetings, perinatal quality and safety meetings, mortality and morbidity meetings etc. The successful postholder will be expected to attend and represent neonatal unit in such meetings as per rota.

Our patients are benefitting from our Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub in Hornchurch.

These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and are providing an extra 88,000 scans a year. 

The majority of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the GMC
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Entry onto the Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining a UK CCT Paediatrics with special interest in Neonatal Medicine or equivalent.
  • CESR applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application.
Desirable criteria
  • UK CCT in Neonatal Medicine or equivalent
  • Higher qualification, e.g. MD/PhD
  • NLS Instructor
