Lead Midwife 

An exciting opportunity has arisen for the post of Lead Midwife within the National Strategic Clinical Network for Maternity and Neonatal Services.

Strategic Clinical Networks are an essential national vehicle for joint working between key stakeholders including NHS Wales, Welsh Government and the third sector to improve the outcomes and experience for the population of Wales. Integral to this is the need for continuous improvement and transformational change across a range of our services and approaches and the role of the Strategic Clinical Network is to support this at national, regional and local levels.

This key leadership post provides an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated individual to support the delivery of exciting programmes and projects of work within the National Strategic Clinical Network (NSCN) for Maternity and Neonatal Services.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

  • Provide clear midwifery leadership, management support and advice to the Maternity and Neonatal Network Board
  • Take the midwifery lead on engaging with stakeholders to ensure the identified priorities are delivered through collaborative working
  • Analyse available data and key performance measures to determine areas for national / local
  • Act as the expert point of contact for Network team members, Health Boards, Welsh Government and external agencies
  • Liaise with education providers and practice facilitators to develop a unified strategy to support training needs on an all Wales basis
  • Coordinate a programme of collaborative learning / educational events across the network
  • Work with the Health boards to ensure the workforce requirements of the service are understood and met in line with standards
  • Ensure standards of care are met through the development and implementation of all Wales Maternity policies, protocols and guidelines
  • Work with clinical leads to ensure that robust clinical guidelines and pathways are developed across the Network
  • Ensure effective communication strategies are in place across the Network to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships and promote a learning culture
  • Develop and maintain a process whereby the Network supports clinical networking to encourage an environment of shared learning across Maternity services

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be an experienced senior midwife with proven leadership skills and evidence of collaborative working. They will work in partnership with the Network Clinical Leads and Network Manager in the development and implementation of the work programme in line with identified priorities relating to both the strategic Network and the MatNeo Safety Support Programme. They will provide leadership and support for distinct projects as well as providing expert midwifery advice to other network work streams and aspects of Network business. They will be a champion for Maternity services, acting as an advisory point of contact for stakeholders and provide support and clinical guidance to the Maternity and Neonatal Strategic Network leadership team, to ensure standards of Maternity service provision continue to improve across Wales.

The post holder will have a significant level of experience as a clinical midwife on the practicing register, with evidence of excellent leadership skills, inspiring others to improve standards and consistency of care for women across Wales.

The post is advertised as permanent with the NHS Executive.

The post holder will be required to travel to fulfil the requirements of the role.

Qualifications and/or Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife – currently registered with NMC.
  • Educated to Degree or masters level or accepted equivalent level of knowledge and experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching and Assessing qualification or equivalent experience.
