Job overview

Tunstall ward are looking for an enthusiastic Mental Health Nurse to join their team.

This role includes

  • Improving the lives of those with mental ill health by minimising the impact of their condition through delivery of excellent services to promote recovery.
  • To be compassionate in meeting the needs of patients
  • To be professionally accountable and responsible for patient care, undertaking a range of clinical/therapeutic interventions.
  • Acting as named nurse to patients
  • To facilitate the development of others with in the team and to support student nurses
  • To be responsible for the day to day running of the ward
  • To promote at all times a positive image of mental health services for other people and the wider Trust 

Main duties of the job

Tunstall ward is an acute admission/assessment ward for working age females who are experiencing functional mental illness, many of which are supported home on their discharge from the ward.

Main duties include:

  • Maintaining patients dignity, privacy and safety at all times. Assessing risk
  • Adhering to mental capacity and mental health act.
  • Recognising potential signs of harm and ensuring patients are safeguarded.
  • Maintaining high professional standards.
  • Delivering and planning  evidenced based care in collaboration with the patient, families and wider MDT.
  • Assessing patient need and delivering appropriate and timely interventions.
  • Safe administration and storage of medicines. 

The MDT team consists of medical staff, psychology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and language services, dietetics and physical health care, due to this we are able to offer a comprehensive assessment of each patient and their individual needs.

Daily MDT report outs and discussions aid the holistic approach to our care on Tunstall and contribute to the effective treatment and management of each patient, whilst considering discharge planning throughout their in-patient journey.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This role  involves working in a fast pace inpatient environment for 20 patients with mental health problems.

It involves the delivery of high quality interventions to meet the needs of the patient, developed in collaboration with the patient, their families and the wider MDT whilst following best practice guidelines. 

This post is only open to those candidates who already have their NMC registration in place and have successfully completed the preceptorship programme. Please note: Newly qualified applicants or those due to qualify will be recruited via our recruitment fairs.

Essential criteria
  • Current professional registration with Nursing & Midwifery Council RNMH or RNLD (RNSC – CAMHS only ) – RGN (If appropriate – Advert must indicate if the role is open to RGN nurses to apply)
  • To be recognised practice assessor / mentor or work towards in an agreed timescale
  • Trained Clinical Supervisor (within 6 month probationary period)
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Working with people with mental ill health / learning disabilities
  • Working in a person centred therapeutic organisation
  • Working collaboratively with service users and their families/carers
  • Working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Working in partnership with other agencies

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence based knowledge of best practice in caring for patients in the designated field.
  • Understanding of relevant legislation (e.g. Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act)
  • Understanding of Safeguarding and its application in practice
  • Clinical Risk Assessment and Management and its application in practice
  • Clinical Governance and its application in practice
  • Confident working knowledge of clinical medicines management, including administration of injections
