The salary scale above has been agreed as part of the NHS Agenda for Change pay award for 2024/2025 and will be implemented in November 2024 backdated to 1st April 2024 where applicable.
Job overview
To be the autonomous lead professional responsible for assessing and providing total midwifery care to mothers and babies throughout normal pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period without direct supervision.
To be experts in the field of midwifery.
To be responsible for identifying deviations from the “norm” and referring to other appropriate health care professionals.
To provide midwifery care to mothers and babies throughout pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period under the guidance of other health care professionals where it has been assessed that there has been a deviation from the “norm”.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
- To be responsible for assessment, development, planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for normal midwifery throughout pregnancy, labour and post delivery seeking the advice of the shift coordinator as necessary.
- To work within the rules and guidelines of the NMC and the BCUHB.
- Seeking the advice of the shift coordinator as necessary identify clients for referral to other specialists when needs and risks are beyond one’s own scope of practice, working in collaboration with these specialists to continue to meet the needs of clients.
- To identify and report poor performance issues, addressing these with individuals where appropriate.
- To inform the shift coordinator, bleep holder, or Supervisor of Midwives when agreed standards cannot be met.
- Ensure that the ward environment is conducive to meeting the needs of the patients at all times.
- To be aware of the Health Board child protection procedures and have the knowledge and ability to make appropriate referrals to social services.
- To communicate sensitively and effectively with a wide range of people in a manner which promotes positive working relationships.
- With the support of the shift coordinator effectively communicate and explore complex issues and make complex decisions and judgements relating to patient care using appropriate interpersonal skills e.g. negotiating, persuading, reassuring, empathising.
