Job overview

Working as a senior leader in the nursing directorate of NHS England South East region, you will have the opportunity to improve and influence patient and staff outcomes and experience at a strategic level as Head of Clinical Programmes.

The successful candidate will be a registered healthcare professional with relevant and current professional registration (Registered Nurse or equivalent) or manager with significant demonstrable relevant healthcare experience.

The post holder will be responsible for programme management and delivery across a broad, dynamic and interesting portfolio on behalf of the Regional Chief Nurse, in the Nursing Professional and System Development team. This includes Palliative and End of Life Care, Patient Experience and Involvement, Unpaid Carers, Professional and System Development, Nursing Professional Nurse Advocacy, Nursing Global Majority, Women’s Health and Nursing Research programmes.

This is a key role in the team, and includes deputising for the Assistant Director of Nursing, providing leadership, ensuring delivery and supporting the team to achieve results in our regional and ICB work programmes at a strategic level. The post-holder will provide credible, effective and visible leadership at a local and regional level.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a candidate with a proven track record of positively leading teams, and a good understanding of the complexities of managing multiple and varied programmes, with a dynamic, enthusiastic, collaborative approach which gets results.

  • Leading a small team on day to day basis to successfully deliver results across a broad programme portfolio. Regular reporting and management of risks and issues through established governance arrangements.

·       Working closely with the Assistant Director of Nursing-Professional and System Development to innovate and generate new approaches for delivery, regularly deputising and maintaining excellent communications across the team.

·       Developing and providing bespoke support to a wide range of stakeholders to enable implementation and delivery of national, regional and local priorities.

·       Providing subject matter expertise across the portfolio.

·       Innovating and managing stakeholder events, managing communication platforms and supporting shared learning opportunities.

·       Ensuring the team is making an impact by developing and using the most appropriate metrics for measuring project and programme success and monitoring progress to ensure delivery.

·       Work closely with the NHS England national and linked regional teams to support with the national priorities, including health inequalities, equality, diversity and inclusion, nursing policy and strategy, elective care recovery and urgent emergency care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder should have a proactive and dynamic approach, and will need to be adaptable and flexible, with the ability to travel regionally regularly and nationally at times. Given the complex and high profile nature and role of the portfolio, there may be a requirement to react and respond quickly and professionally to external queries and short notice requirements. 

Working across internal teams in a matrix approach, and with a wide range of stakeholders including Integrated Care System, Provider and Primary Care leaders, professionals, voluntary sector, patients, carers, subject matter experts and related arms lengths bodies the post holder will have excellent communication and organisational skills, combined with robust programme management, leadership and improvement experience.

  • Experience and ability to provide leadership, management and support for the team to deliver on a broad portfolio, including palliative and end of life care, patient experience and involvement, unpaid carers, nursing global majority and nursing professional & system development programmes.
  • Dynamic, innovative, inclusive and proactive approach, with appropriate qualifications, expertise and experience in a range of improvement approaches.
  • Proven track record and demonstrates strong commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion. Upholds NHS people values, promotes and enables a positive team culture and environment..
  • Experience and confidence in understanding, interpreting, analysing and presenting
  • Experience working in collaboration with clinical and subject matter experts, commissioning and contracting advice and services as required.
