Main duties of the job

You will work closely with colleagues and you will be given the opportunities to learn about the various specialties that Outpatients support. Teamwork is an essential part of this role as you will be working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

You will be responsible for supporting a range of Cardiology clinics and developing services according to patient demand and need.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Health Care Assistant to gain experience in supporting an Outpatient setting.

Under the delegation and supervision of the registered healthcare practitioner, the Health Care Assistant will carry out all of the delegated duties listed in the main responsibilities section below independently within the health care team. The post holder will work within the out-patient department as part of a team supporting patients, clinicians and colleagues during outpatient consultations.  They will provide the fundamentals of care to patients in the hospital to ensure high standards are maintained in a safe environment including patient safety and to make sure that the care experience is positive by treating all patients, family, relatives and colleagues with respect, dignity and courtesy in accordance with Trust values and policies.

Cardiology admin will also be included in this post, for the safe running of the clinics 

No duties are to be undertaken by the post holder unless they have received the correct training. All duties must be in accordance with the Band 2 skills matrix.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. Will have the knowledge and skills to provide the fundamental care needs for individual patients under the direction and supervision of the registered practitioner, the following can be undertaken in the band 2 training period, following the GWH standards of care. These duties will be repetitive, routine and familiar, following the patient care plan and consent gained from the patient which must include;
  • Caring and communication with kindness and compassion
  • Personal Care including catheter care (if required)
  • Nutrition and Hydration support
  • Collect specimens (routine bodily fluids only)
  • Moving and handling
  • Environmental maintenance
  • Performing care in line with risk assessments and care plans
  • Ensure all clinical rooms are stocked up with appropriate clinical forms and patient information sheets
  • Assist with the preparation of medical notes to facilitate the running of clinics.
  • Escort to other departments 
  • Instigate Emergency procedure
  • Completion of accident / incident forms
  • Promote person centered values and provide support for patients wellbeing and fulfilment
  1. Achieve the desirable requirements in the training and education section of the person specification within agreed timeframe.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE A*-D (9-4) in English Language or equivalent
  • GCSE A*-D (9-4) in Mathematics or equivalent
  • Able to demonstrate literacy and numeracy skills at interview assessment
Desirable criteria
  • Level 2 QCF Diploma in Clinical Healthcare support
  • Level 2 NVQ in Healthcare Health & Social Care
  • Level 2 in Health & Social care (NVQ, QCF, RQF)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of ability to work as a member of a team
  • Experience of time management and prioritising work
Desirable criteria
  • Prior experience of providing care in a healthcare or social setting

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Understands and is committed to a caring approach to patients and relatives
  • Effective and appropriate communication skills both written and verbal
  • Able to complete appropriate documentation accurately
  • Committed to providing high quality patient care
  • IT skills, competent in Microsoft Office
